Yeah, Ged really tears it up during By-Tor. :D But you know, I would actually go all the way back to the version on All The World's A Stage for the heavy duty Rickenbacker tones. And while I'm at it, what about his very aggressive tone during the intro to Cygnus X-1 on the AFTK album? Somehow I can't quite get that sound out of my 4003 and my ancient Yamaha amp that's never seen a vacuum tube in its life.

Less Rushy but equally mainstream, I'd suggest Squires's crunching sound on Long Distance Runaround, particularly those descending slides he does on the E string.

And one I've just thought of: isn't it his jetglo 4008 we hear Joe Satriani playing on Echo, from Surfing With The Alien? I always liked that meaty growl.

Well, you're right about the tone he had on ATWAS. That is the Ampeg sound there for sure. And Cygnus X-1. Yeah!
To get that sound, first try Rotosound Swing Bass strings, and then try playing pretty hard closer to the neck pickup.
Not sure about Satchmo though.

Oh, and Squire's sound on YES and Time and a Word is outstanding along with the Fragile album as you noted with Long Distance Runaround. Add Heart of the Sunrise to that as well. AND the Drama album is VERY impressive for Squire's Rick tone.

I remember seeing Geddy and the boys at the Moncton Coliseum backing up April Wine or the J.Louis Levesque arena in Moncton, New Brunswick. This show was anouncing the Atwas album coming out in two weeks with wireless backing and the next was the Farewell To Kings Tour...Both with three ampeg SVT heads and three or four 4x12 cabs with Max Webster and Ian Thomas backing. That was crunch and tone Ricks and SVTs' rock. yes...yes, iIve used this pairing since 1978. It's time tested! Forget that transistor stuff. Try an SVT (pre 1980) it's an experience you'll not soon forget. BTW ...you can also use it to heat the cold rehearsal room or toast that peanut butter and jelly sandwich that your band was gonna share!!!

Well, I'm going amp shopping in the not-to-distant future. I am looking at Ampeg. But there are so many models to choose from. I know that one really has to go out and try the amps and speaker combinations for themselves to find the right match. But, here's the deal. I like what I've heard about the SVT3PRO heads. I also could say screw that, and go for the SVT-CL and I'm thinking if I went with the SVT-CL it's either the 8X10 cab or a 410 and a 1X15. I think if I were to go with the SVT-3PRO head it would be the 4X10 or a 1x12 and a 1X15. See, the confusion is driving me nuts.
And what is this I've been hearing about the old SVT heads being better than the new ones. Something to do with the preamp section being better. But, wouldn't an older one be just that? Older and more used. I would think a new SVT-CL and a 8X10 or 4X10 and a 1X15 would be enough to do the deed.
Either way it's going to be expensive ESPECIALLY when I get TWO stacks because I run my Rickenbacker 4001 in stereo. I just can't go back to mono anymore. The sound is just too good in stereo.

Thoughts?

And what is the best money printer out there?

2112...4x10 and a 1x15 is perfect to round out a sound. As long as you have an amp with two separated inputs, you can use the stack I mentioned for economy sakes. In my collection I have a 1970 Fender 400ps which has three separate outputs so I connected 10's, 15's and the original 18 cab at the same time...Kind of bi-amping. Sounded great! Mind you, my rig is for concert use, so most of you would consider it excessive for jamming or small club use. I can economize and just grab an SVT and 4x10...I just prefer m-o-r-e!

Here's a link to my rig at a friend's site...
