Good idea, T. So I started a new thread to get a FL and FL player count and to gauge/generate more interest.ajish4 wrote:Just wondering...
Just HOW MANY 4000, 4001, 4002 (1 I think) and 4003FL Players there are here?
I'd love to have a little sub section or something dedicated to FRETLESS if there seems to be enough input.

SURE Jeff! Why NOT?
Fretless is a horse of a different color, so ALL FL input would be cool.
Thanks Joey, great idea!
I'd love to see a FL section to also let people know just how COOL a RIC Fretless DOES sound.....and possibly create some more folks to discover them as well.
I can't tell you how many people are shocked when I tell them RIC makes a fretless.
Re: 4001FL Sample recording (Youtube)
I should qualify that; I don't have a Rick fretless any more, but I do have a Rick Turner fretless!I still play fretless just with no Ricks.
Re: 4001FL Sample recording (Youtube)
I think a fretless section would be a great idea too. I can't claim to be a fretless player 'cause I don't have one... YET. That's next on my list though. It used to be a 5 string, but I'm gettin' pretty happy with my 4004Cjj tuned BEAD. Now, if only I could get a fretless 4004Cii...
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

Re: 4001FL Sample recording (Youtube)
I hear a lot more upright-like tone in the 4003FL than I do in, say, a fretless Jazz. For whatever reason... I really can't account for it other than what my ears hear. Warwicks would be my other "sounds like an upright, kinda" go-to fretless. Part of this is surely because, as you point out, there is more than one "upright bass sound". My biggest influence in trying to cop upright sounds is Paul Chambers most of the time.FretlessOnly wrote:Well, let's be honest. There are several distinct upright bass sounds. A few that come to mind:
Mingus's gut string monstrous attack and grind
Ray Brown's big round tone
Christian McBride's trebly/mid growl
Neils-Henning Orsted Pederson's speaking to you brrrrrrraww...
And there are so many more. No fretless electric bass (I don't mean electric uprights in any fashion here) has ever been able to come very close to any of these sounds.

You would do well to do that. If you really want to cop his sound, it's a bit like the rhetoric about Geddy Lee.cassius987 wrote: My biggest influence in trying to cop upright sounds is Paul Chambers most of the time.
It's not in the instrument or the amplification, it's all about technique.
Paul Chambers was a very large man; a man who could pull a gut bass string back like a bow with an arrow from a quiver, and shoot a note straight into your gut (or soul if you swing that way).
Chambers could also bow the hell out of his upright, which instantly made him top dog amongst many top dogs. And I'll tell you; bowing an upright, especially in jazz-style, is like trying to herd cats with drunk armadillos.
Can we have everything louder than everything else?

I SURE could use some advice from you more experienced FL players!
ANDY, this includes you too!![]()
It's a good idea. I sure haven't found too many of them. FL Ricks seems to be a bit of a rare treasure (not a surprise I suppose, Ricks themselves are a bit of a "rare" treasure). I'd sure like a sub-section if there's enough FL players around.
