He can still sing.

Perhaps he can spend his downtime doing drum programming?

Count me in as someone who never got the attraction of his drumming. I've never found it to be terribly spectacular.

Though it's always a shame when someone is forced to give up something they love, and for that, I truly feel sorry for him.

Yeah, this makes me sad...I wish he had lost his voice but could still play...

The guy's one of the best drummers who's ever played...but even his drumming went downhill in the late Genesis/solo career era (early '80s on). Some of the fills on his solo albums sound like the were played by Bev Bevans with two broken arms...

However...you want "terribly spectacular"? There are plenty of stellar examples...the entire 7/8 section at the end of Cinema Show leaps to mind. But here's one that can't be beat: the full-kit 'roundhouse' fill in the middle of the quiet section of "Get 'Em Out By Friday", which goes from pp to ffff and back in less than a measure...or, another: the (sounds like a single-stroke) roll fill near the end of "Musical Box". Very few drummers in modern music could come close to being able to throw down like that...

+1

His playing in the early Brand X also comes to mind.

Phil Collins is an amazing musician who has done much to elevate how others view drummers. He is a master drummer, great song writer, and a fantastic vocalist. Next time you hear a bad drummer joke, bring up Collins.

Personally I always found his drumming adequate, no more.

while i could agree his drum parts got a lot more pedestrian in later years,(as did the songs in general,hence...) have a listen to anything from "the lamb",selling england, wind and wuthering, brand x,.....and then tell me you hear a mediocre drummer.......i've seen genesis play live from 1972 through the present, and he is one of the best.

ps i like bev bevan,too....... 8)

Yeah, okay Woody, that might have been a cheap shot on my part...I don't dislike ol' Bev, I just think that if he could hold that left stick in a more natural fashion, he might be able to 'get the piano off his back'...

So, let's review...our 'findings' include: Phil Collins' drumming is 'not terribly spectacular' and 'no more than adequate'. These are the most absolutely stunning observations to have graced these pages since the thread that proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that Jaco was a lousy bass player. If this keeps up, the Forum will soon become the anti-intellectual musician's 'go to' source for validation...

No indeed, Collin, not because people disagree with me. But thanks for calling in and playing our game...
