Very cool - you don't see many 4-8-4 steam locomotives in use these days! We're all about the trains in this household. My kid has a Lionel layout that I got him started on a couple of years ago (still a work in progress) and this summer we rode the Grand Canyon Railway to the south rim out of Williams, AZ. Hoping to get out to Durango, CO one year to ride the Durango & Silverton scenic railway and make a trip to Cass, WV in 2010 to ride the Cass Scenic Railroad.

PS Former railroader here, too. I worked summers in college for the Lehigh Valley RR. My Dad was a lifer on the Penna. RR and it's various successors.

When the freight trains come through at night near where I live, the guys running the trains don't blow the horns enough to alert the people in the streets that a train is coming, they blow their horns enough to alert everyone sleeping in bed that they are coming!!

I used to live near the tracks, and every night they'd awaken me when they came past the nearby crossings.After a while, I slept thru their passings,got used to them.

Moved several miles away, and then every night I woke up when they didn't pass by.It took a while to get used to that and sleep thru the night

Love those old trains..have some cool childhood memories riding them up the California coast route. Out this way Sacramento has a real nice train museum.

Trains are one of my favorite geek hobbies. One nice thing about not having any kids is the YOU get to be the kid. With all the guitars, trains, boat stuff and other distractions, my office is a perfect example of what happens when there is no adult supervision on the premises.

Very, very cool from a model train geek standpoint. Back in '91 an ex-office mate stole my entire $$$ Marklin "Z" gauge setup, which was mostly boxed up to move into my new office...since then I'm Jonesin'. Still have the Rail Zeppelin, though...

Not at the prices that good locomotives bring..... The layout runs along the top of my built-in bookshelves and is only 12" wide in most places. The next stop is the floor about five feet down. I usually disassemble, repaint, weather and then reassemble a few steam locos each winter and sell them on eBay, which finances the hobby. It also does wonders for your hand/eye coordination as most of them are only 4-5 inches long.
