JB vs JB2
Hi,
What's the difference between the Janglebox and the Janglebox2.. apart from the JB2 having more knobs and is a different colour?
I suppose what I am asking is which is the best one sound-wise in reproducing the Byrds sound?
Cheers

Re: JB vs JB2
I own the JB1, and if you want that Byrds sound, it gets close enough for my money.
It appears that the JB2 is a little more adjustable than the JB1. By that I mean you can (apparently) make finer changes in the sounds you can get, and more quickly, too. I say "apparently" because I don't own one.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the JB1. It's simple, straightforward, and once you get your preferred sound dialed in, you can jangle, chime, and twang away to your heart's content.
I rather wish I could try out a JB2 and find out what the improvements are over the JB1.

The only thing that worries me slightly about the JB2 is that is it a case of doing it the way Boss sell pedals, by fixing something that ain't actually broke? By bring out “the definitive sound”... then bringing out the better and improved "definitive sound 2".
I tend to find with these things, rightly or wrongly, that the more controls you are given and the more words there are in the instruction manual then you end up spending way more time tweaking and adjusting than actually using it for what you bought it for in the first place… but it’s probably just me getting older and more cranky.
Some of the sound clips on the Janglebox site are excellent.
The tone of The Bells of Rhymney played on an Ibanez 12, I think is brilliant, and if I could get my Burns Double Six to sound like that I would be very happy.

Re: JB vs JB2
I never have played a double six. And so I'm a little dubious that you could get the same chime & jangle from it, since that sound depends on having octave strings. If simplicity is your preference, then go with the JB1. Best money I ever spent on a stomp box.

Well here's a pic of it.jimk wrote:I never have played a double six. And so I'm a little dubious that you could get the same chime & jangle from it, since that sound depends on having octave strings.
Have a look at the headstock and see if you change your mind.

Anyway that's a photo of my Burns Double Six... two six's = 12.
The cat (one of 6 we have) is called Neo.
It's one of the bigest guitars I have ever owned, the body is huge and the 6 a-side headstock is monsterous, it weighs in at 9.5lbs it won't go near a normal case so I had to buy a Coffin Bass Case for it and that's only just big enough.

I discussed the differences between the JangleBox and the JB2 in a couple of threads earlier this year, one of them is here:The_Running_Man wrote: Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.

I know exactly what you mean (and also have had the irritating experience of being duped by) so-called "upgrades" that were actually inferior to the original product. I can assure you that's not the case with the JB2. Listen to some of Craig T. Fall's JB2 clips, and compare the sound to the JangleBox clips you like.
The heart of the circuit is identical to the original JangleBox. The upgrades were suggested to us mostly by touring professionals. The JB2 was designed primarily as a stage pedal, and it does provide significantly more flexibility and versatility. But to JangleBox users who have no need to switch the EQ toggle mid-performance, or any desire for a secondary boost, there's probably no compelling reason to upgrade to a JB2.
Of course, there probably also was "no compelling reason" when I bought my sixth Ric 12-string back in the day, but ...

Re: JB vs JB2
Steve, thanks for the reply it's very much appreciated.
Having re-read what I wrote, I realise the way it could be read by someone else, Could I please just clarify that it wasn't a dig at you or your marketing policy it was just a sweeping generalisation about Big Corporate Marketing techniques in general.
I had heard quite independently of this forum that you were an honest guy and not out to capitalise on things with the new product.
Way ahead of you there, I have already listened to Craig's JB2 sound clips and I agree, very, very similar sound wise.
I suppose for home players and home recording like myself a JB would do just fine, the JB2 is, as you say, geared towards gigging musicians. The days of carrying a Marshall 100w Superlead and two 4x12's cabs upstairs to the gig and downstairs after the gig are over I'm afraid (still got 'em but they rarely, if ever now, get put to their full potential).
I will be getting a Janglebox very soon (nice to be on a forum that allows the word Janglebox to be typed without someone changing the text after I post it... a bit puerile I thought) and it will 99% probably be a standard JB... I was very, very impressed with the sound Craig got with the Ibanez-12 on the Bells of Rhymney section.
Right, I'll go and read through the posts in the link you sent me and have a hunt around the forum for other threads on the JB and JB2.
Thanks Steve, and congratulations on designing and making such a superb sounding pedal, and that's from a guy who only ever, on very few occasions, uses a Danelectro Reel Echo and a Jim Dunlop Cry Baby... and very soon a Janglebox.
As I said earlier... if I could get my Burns Double Six to sound like that I would be very, very happy.
Cheers for now
Gareth

Re: JB vs JB2
I haven't wanted to use my JB as a floor pedal due to the rather small toggle switch ,risking it getting broken by a heavy foot;judging from the picture of the JB 2 that's been resolved.(My JB stays on the amp)
The extra knobs look like the 2 can be better fine tuned soundwise.
It's on my "get it " list.
Running Man: don't overlook flat wound strings in the quest for the tone.

Re: JB vs JB2
I do tend to use Rickenbacker strings on the Burns 12 (even given their price, I still use them) and have recently bought 10 sets of GHS 9-42 Precision Flatwound strings which up to now I have only used on my ES335 and not on any of my Ric 6's, all my other guitars get Super Slinkys or D'Addarios in 9-42.fatcat wrote: Running Man: don't overlook flat wound strings in the quest for the tone.
Do you have any recommendations on string makes and string gauges I could try in my quest for (in my case 60's Mersey Sound and Byrds) tonal excellence? I suspect heavier than 9's 'cause in the 60's you were very lucky to even get 10's, I remember using Black Diamond and La Bella tape wound strings on my Tele in the late 60's (either them or whatever they had in the shop at the time), I have no idea what gauge they were 'cause you just bought 'em, put 'em on and if required you would file the nut slots wider 'till the strings fitted... all very technical... NOT.
Also what about plain 3rd vs wound 3rd?
Cheers
Gareth
Re: JB vs JB2
Gareth, pickofthericks offers a 12 string set of Tomastic Infeld Flats. These strings are best choice for what you are looking for. Depending on where you are located you can order these also here :The_Running_Man wrote: Do you have any recommendations on string makes and string gauges I could try in my quest for (in my case 60's Mersey Sound and Byrds) tonal excellence? You can order them singlewise and they ship worlwide.
Besides on my 360/12V64 I have them on my EKO Barracuda 12 string from the early 70's, they sound just great !
The New Silver JangleBox. Better Box, Better Price
As some of you JB owners know, the original, USA-made JangleBox has been an undeniable success. But to even better meet customers’ needs — especially in this economy — we’ve continued to explore ways we could improve price, quality, and service.
For the past 18-months we worked through an exhaustive process with an international assembler to achieve five objectives:
The new, silver JangleBox includes:
If you know a local music dealer who you think should be carrying the new JangleBox, have them contact us (we're shipping promos to dealers and retailers across the USA next week to announce it).
We should be shipping in the next couple of weeks, but we’re taking orders now. If you’ve been waiting for a used JB to show up on Ebay, or have been put off by the pin pos polarity issue, now’s a great time to consider a new silver JangleBox.
[We will continue manufacturing the original USA JangleBox in smaller quantities.]

For the past 18-months we worked through an exhaustive process with an international assembler to achieve five objectives:
- 1. Lower the price.
2. Eliminate the pin-positive polarity issue.
3. Put an end to assembly delays that had customers waiting up to eight weeks for their JangleBox.
4. Maintain the same great JangleBox sound, still using top-grade components.
5. Expand our very limited dealer network.
The new, silver JangleBox includes:
- • New diode bridge that works with both pin-positive and pin-negative adapters and cables.
• No more special adapter or reverse polarity cable required.
• EC and FCC test certification and RoHS compliance for European Union retailers and dealers.
• Even a bit quieter output than the original.
• Same rugged die-cast aluminum box with a new silver powder coat.
• Same great chime, sustain and brilliance.
If you know a local music dealer who you think should be carrying the new JangleBox, have them contact us (we're shipping promos to dealers and retailers across the USA next week to announce it).

Maybe it's because it was pretty much an advertisement for said new product and it got deleted?
I read it, but it seems to have gone missing...

I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...
