Horseshoe Pickup

if you were to change your original 4003 treble pickup to a horseshoe pickup but the bass has that switch that could turn it to sound like a 4001 would it have a effect? oh my bass is a 2006 and brings that opitonal switch that y im asking! please help!

greetings. all the switch is for is to put a filter cap in and out of the rear pickup circuit to either let the pickup go full out or decrease the bottom end. this way, you have options as to the sound you get out of the bass in conjuction with the neck pickup.
using the rear pickup alone, i would want it full out, but with the neck pickup in the circuit, this sounds like a fender jazz bass with the 2 pickups on...nasal sounding. with the filter cap in , the neck pickup becomes the dominant tone with added highs from the rear pickup. i prefer just using the neck pickup alone or the rear pickup alone full out. it's a matter of the individual and their preference.

The simple answer is yes, it does have an effect. Depending on what the song requires I will switch in the cap on the HS pickup in this bass. It also come in handy to get rid of excess boom depending on the room acoustics of where I am playing.

Thanks, Ron. The pickguard material is the same stuff the new FW inlays are made of. I had this and a traditional white one (which is currently on the bass) made by Pickguardian, along with the plexi finger rest. Here is a closer view (not that you probably haven't seen it yet ).

Not to derail this thread, but that white pearloid PG looks 1000% better than plain white. Just a lovely bass for sure.

I bet Paul W could make one with his CNC mill (engrave the "Rickenbacker" bit and then jet-glo the script).... Getting the OK to do it is the hard part..

Actually I could see a new deluxe 4003 that is a reissue of a model that never existed coming out of this...

While we're on the topic, I play right over the bridge pickup but like the look of a 4001C64 bass. Could one remove the two C-shaped horseshoe magnet parts on a newer 4001's bridge pickup without affecting the sound much (so one can play there) and without destroying the pickup, OR, would it better just to replace the whole bridge pickup? Please advise.

Yes, the shoes can be removed, just so long as you put a spacer under the bobbin matching the thickness of the shoes to maintain dimensions.

Here's what removing your shoes would look like on a C64S (slightly modified with a non-scooped 70's surround):

IMO the larger surround of the C64 and V63 look strange w/o the shoes. Too much chrome to do nothing but surround a gaping hole and a black piece of plastic. But to each his own.
