Yeah, not much of a story. It must've been a slow news day. But he's right, you know. Ain't nothing like walking into a pub with your guitar and asking "S'cuse me, may I sit in?"

especially if you are Paul McCartney!... (or have real honest to goodness talent, but I wouldn't know about such things)

I think Paul doesn't give the Decca era Beatles enough credit. While it's correct that the Hamburg experience made the Beatles great, they were certainly no slouches for the Decca audition as the tapes show.... and likely one of the better bands in Liverpool even at that early stage.

Thanks Kent!
Glad to you like the pics!

Hey I was just looking closely at the Ed Sullivan pic and I noticed that right behind Ed you can see one of the guitar amps. On my dvds of the show you can't see them.

Do you think those are the same amps they then used for the Washington concert?

Interesting!..... It's hard to tell what that is on the side.... likely the AC30's but that white lettering looks out of place. My guess is that yes, for the Sullivan show I would think they just had their regular amps behind the curtains (which was a very effective way to present the group for 1st time national TV). In those days, the sound "system" for a rock band was pretty much plug'n'play, but I'd be very interested if anyone has further info on the Ed Sullivan setup.

It's a prototype AC-50 head with 2X12 cabinet. Usually the head was placed on the floor under the speaker cab, which was set on an AC-30 stand. For the Sullivan show, the head was stacked on the cab piggyback style. John and George had one AC-50 each, while Paul had a AC-100 bass rig through a T-100 2X15 cabinet. Until August of '64, Paul placed his AC-100 on the cab piggyback style.

This entire Vox setup was given to the group in December of '63, right before the first series of Beatles' Christmas shows.

AC-50's are what I call the best of both worlds. Not as loud as a 100 (I'd assume AC-100's are loud), but louder than a AC-30 (I hear they can be pretty loud). Our own Evan Jones owns an AC-50 head, perhaps he can share what one's like with us.
