My 78 4001 doesn't fit in new cases

Post by markus44uk »

I bought one of the silver tolex vintage Ric 4000 series cases and my 78 4001 moves around in it when I carry it around. Does anyone know if the new black plastic moulded 4003 cases will hold my vintage 4001 more snugly and safely? The case it came in was demolished and unusable and not the original anyway.

Thanks in advance

The black plastic case is a better fit all round I believe. Yes it will fit a late 70s 4001.
The vintage silver case fits the basses with longer headstocks (4004, v63, c64, s/5s etc)
How much did you pay for the silver case? (I ultimately would like to get one for my RM1999 and get it out of a clapped out 70s P bass case)

+1 The vintage silver cases look real nice but the black moulded SKB cases are the best fit.
Your bass will be snug and safe in the SKB.

Thanks....black plastic it is. I got the silver vintage case from Robbie at RickySounds in England. Its about £30 more than the standard black plastic case. The thing I don't like about the vintage and black tolex cases is the lack of neck support and protection vs the moulded case. I also tried the fake brown tweed case that the guy on Ebay sells...it was very well-made and inexpensive but the 4001 was swimming inside...

Yeah, I got a vintage case with my Monty 4003 & it moves enough to have put an ever so slight bit of "case rash" on the butt end of the bass.

From one '78 4001 owner to another - it will absolutely fit and like a glove - I just got one of the new molded cases and it's great.
