neck thickness on late model full width inlay basses

I was a fat neck player for about 40 years. P basses,Dingwall,Zon,4004 etc.

Do you still own any 4004s? The two I have played had a different neck contour than a 4003, and I actually thought they were generally much more comfy than a 4003. Maybe you could try again? Then again you probably have already tried one since your wreck.

When Rick says fat neck or thick, I think he means the width of the fretboard. The 4004s I have tried (and mine) have a thin front to back profile but are wider across the fretboard.

That's right John. Width at the nut, although my favorites were the old 51 P bass Style baseball bat necks which were "Fat" around everywhere. I only respond to these neck thickness threads because I bought my 08 4003 (having not played one) after reading on this forum how thin the necks were. I did not realize the references were front to back. I was thinking the new necks were like my old 77 4001 (thin and narrow). So, I thought maybe I could help someone get a clear view and not be as shocked as I was upon receiving my bass. My 08 4003 has worked out very well for me and now I will stop responding to these threads since I believe I am beating a dead horse

I know it's my fault for being away, but, can someone please shed light on this "two piece neck" thingimyjig.

Are we talking redo of the skunk stripe, or a standard neck blank sawn in half and glued !!

I keep thinking "two piece neck", yes, fretboard and neck, two pieces.

Help !!!!

Ahh ... thanks for the picture, not so sure I like that construction though !!

Apparently, they take the wood, cut it in half then rotate the 2 pieces 90 degrees before gluing them back together. This makes a much stiffer piece of wood than a single piece, allowing a thinner neck. I'm not sure if that description is quite correct, Ben Hall described it somewhere, but I haven't found it yet.

Hey Rick, I recall that your 2008 bass had a 1 3/4'' nut width. You may want to look for another one, as mine (I checked this morning for an unrelated reason) are 1 11/16''. May be more comfy for you that way, even if it's just 1/16''. I know people get pretty finicky about some of these details when it comes to practically every brand of bass... so you may try shopping around for another to replace yours, unless you've come to like it anyways. (Because yours is wider it may make a better 5er!)

I am good with it now. The nut is 1 3/4" but the neck is less than that at 1 11/16". Good suggestion but no more searching for me............that is until I have some $$$ for a 80s S model !
