Enjoyed that, thanks for posting, Dane. Did you have flatwound strings on your 4001FL for the recording?

Yeah, Joey...I used to use rounds 'back in the day', but I began to get some wear in the fingerboard under the E and A strings near the nut...decided the Brazilian Rosewood was worth preserving, so I switched to flats around '96.

Nicest Rickenbacker 4001 fretless that I have EVER seen.
Beautiful wood grain and the checkerboard is the icing on the cake.

Are you certain it's not the usual bubinga?wayang wrote:Yeah, Joey...I used to use rounds 'back in the day', but I began to get some wear in the fingerboard under the E and A strings near the nut...decided the Brazilian Rosewood was worth preserving, so I switched to flats around '96.
Believe it or not I have actually had some E and A string wear in the varnish close to the nut in just over a year of steady playing, with D'Addario Chromes. So it may not have been your rounds but just the string action/excursion. Apparently most fretless basses take to nickel-wrapped strings fairly well, or so string manufacturers sometimes claim. (DR Nickel Sunbeams are marketed this way.)
...By the way, I absolutely love that recording, Dane. Nice work!! There are so many talented and diverse players here. Cheers, folks...

I'm pretty sure it's Rosewood, JC...one of these days I'll get around to taking a decent picture and posting it...

I'm not certain of the time frame, but for several years '70's - '80's the fingerboards were Hong Kong Rosewood.cassius987 wrote:Are you certain it's not the usual bubinga?wayang wrote:Yeah, Joey...I used to use rounds 'back in the day', but I began to get some wear in the fingerboard under the E and A strings near the nut...decided the Brazilian Rosewood was worth preserving, so I switched to flats around '96.

Re: Forumite Rickenbacker Fretless Bass Guitar Count
So here's a question... were there ever any 4004 Fretless basses made?
Also, has anyone ever seen a 4001 FL or 4003 FL with black trim -- I mean the full deal with black binding?

I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...
