A big thanks from me too! And thanks as well to all those currently serving, such as my nephew in Afghanistan!

I've got my flag out! I've noticed that not many put out flags at their houses any longer.

We just lost my Father-in-Law a few weeks back. He served during Vietnam in the 101st Airborne.

It was humbling to stand in that Military Cemetery looking out over all those THOUSANDS & THOUSANDS of our Military who have served our Country. It was a sea of Granite headstones. Very humbling.

Yes, thank you one and all.

And indeed, Arlington National Cemetery is an impressive and humbling sight.

Impressive and humbling indeed. Take the time to visit the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier through a guard change. That's dedication.

My sister, who's a professor at UCIrvine, is currently working on her next book, which will focus on morale among active-duty military personnel and their families during wartime. As she conducts her research, she occasionally comes across things she thinks I would find interesting. She sent me this link to a copy of a 1965 US television report on the Feb. 7 attack on Camp Holloway at Pleiku (this was the night my dad lost four kids in his platoon and was one of over a hundred wounded):

http://www.archive.org/details/1965-02- ... in_Vietnam

She also found this Oct. '64 letter from Dad to me, the eight-year-old 'man of the house':

In my memories of that time, Vietnam is 'bigger than the Beatles'...
I didn't get where I am today by being on time...

Dane, powerful stuff, thanks for sharing! Glad your dad made it through.

.....and I'd say the music lessons did go well.

.....and remember, this Veteran's Day (and hopefully the next couple) will be as important as ever, as new veterans return from the Middle East to face civilian life in a harsh economic climate, and in the face of unfriendly politics.

Remember, if you see a returning vet, give them a nice handshake and a "Thank you for your service," -- no politics necessary. :)
