Les Paul Goldtop

Post by octagon »

I stopped by my local guitar store and I saw this guitar on the wall. It's a 2000 Gibson Les Paul 57 reissue.Wow,I love this guitar! I've had a couple of Les Pauls in the past but this is the best one. The only problem is the original owner kept the COA because Les Paul had autographed it for him.Somebody told me that you can get a replacement COA from Gibson but you have to send the guitar to Memphis... that sounds familar...

Nice guitar! My LP didn't get a COA when I bought it at GC (they probably lost it), but don't worry about it, it doesn't affect the value much, if at all. Pretty pointless on a mass-produced guitar anyway.

Agreed. Just another remnant of the whole "Limited Edition" nonsense.

I mean "nonsense" when the edition is limited to the entire run of thousands (like this one), or, as in the case of all those phony mints with official-sounding names like "American Mint", to one month's production of one of their goofy coins, which could be tens of thousands of pieces.

A COA on an item like this might complete the concept to a marketing person, but really is virtually meaningless. After all, It's a genuine Gibson, it's a Les Paul gold top, the serial number can be traced, etc.

Nice LP -- I'm partial to goldtops myself! FWIW, Gibson Custom did not issue COAs in 2000 for any custom shop model. The COA fist appeared in 1999 then was not offered in 2000 but was standard with all Custom Shop instruments starting in 2001.

Also as far as obtaining a replacement COA, all one has to do is contact customer service via e-mail or a phone call and provide a serial number. I didn't receive one with my 2001 '56 Historic Les Paul and that was all it took; plus I had it in hand in a week. Unless they've changed the policy regarding this (sounds rather ridiculous to send an instrument with you paying shipping both ways to the manufacturer for a $2 piece of paper), the only true requirement was that you had to be the original owner of the guitar and have the sales receipt or documentation proving such.

Thanks Mike.I really don't care care that much about the C.O.A. Maybe the guy who sold it to the store made up that part about keeping it because it had Les Pauls autograph. I mean, how could he have one if Gibson never issued them in 2000?
