4000 bass with BTO
Tonight was watching some cheesy VH1 show that was basically an advertisement for a Time-Life collection, "No. 1 Hits of the '70s" or something like that. Spotted a Ric 4000 bass - BTO doing "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" - not sure of the bass player, though I found a reference in this thread (would have just linked to this post, but the video has been removed). You have to wade through some Suzanne Somers at the beginning. Sounds like maybe flats to me? Just what I needed - RAS!

Yep, I think your are right about the flat wounds. Thanks for posting that.

i've just outfitted my newly refretted 4000 with maxima flats, and a new antler nut,and the thing has WAY more clang than i would have imagined possible. if i turn the tone control all the way off,it sounds more like what i typically expect flats to sound like, all smooth 'n' buttery......

Flats are funny that way! I've never tried the Maximas, but Chromes can definitely put out some high end.woodyng wrote:i've just outfitted my newly refretted 4000 with maxima flats, and a new antler nut,and the thing has WAY more clang than i would have imagined possible. if i turn the tone control all the way off,it sounds more like what i typically expect flats to sound like, all smooth 'n' buttery......

+1
I hadn't used flats for decades, last time was on a Guild bass, no idea what kind they were, probably around 1978 or so. I've always used Rotosound roundwounds on Ricks. I put some D'A Chromes on my '76 4001 and WOW! They sound amazingly bright, not like the mud I remember from way back when.

I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

I have to admit though, I like the sound he's getting in this clip - I used to always be a roundwound player, but I've come to appreciate the no-treble/strong fundamental flatwound approach too. I am really jonesing for a '70s 4000!

Re: 4000 bass with BTO
i remember them coming to the moncton coliseum in 1975 for the 4x4 tour. fred had the wine 4000 with the black pickguard complete with thumb pick...i'm looking at the pics i took right at the moment of this post. he ran it thru 3 acoustic 370 heads, with 4 sets of folded horn cabs. two of the cabs look similar to the hiwatt bass folded horns and two look like public address mids folded horns. he was wearing the sweat-stained yellowish shamm wow jumpsuit, randy a pink outfit, blair a shiny yellow jumpsuit and robby jeans and cowboy shirt. all taken with my trusty kodak instamatic 104 with flash cubes ! bob seger band backing ! they did not return the next year due to robbie having a race car accident, (go-cart ?). you guys keep pulling out this old stuff, and i keep giving you a history lesson !!!!!!

trying to load it but the screen says "the extension bmp not allowed" ???? will keep trying.
Re: 4000 bass with BTO
You need to convert it to a .jpg, Ron. If you don't have the software to do that e-mail the file to me at labwork AT sbcglobal DOT net.
