paul w. - i THINK wints was referring to the "newer" old 4000's, not the 50's thick bodied, different pickguard/bridges,etc., ones.....i have never seen one of those in person, but yeah they do look VERY chunky. OTTH,my '74 4000 has a very thin neck, the body is almost as thin as my cii's, and it weighs not quite 8 pounds. I do think it has its own cool vibe compared to 2 pickup 4001's from the same era. With my bass,I am definitely not a stickler for historic detail,as i will do mods that make it more useful/playable to me,but on a 60's model,i would want to go for as much original detail as i could......

Thanks for all of the thoughts and input! Just so's you know... I will be heeding your advice and trying to make it as original as possible, no extra routes, no 2nd pickup. THANKS again!

wow,,very lucky guy!!,having done mods to some of my guitars, which I regret now, I would go with original as possible too,my 68 4001 had such a lovely shade of Fireglo, but Jetglo looks classy too, I vote for original tho,, Mike Spicer,at the Peghead in Hamilton would have some good advice about dealing with the oil finish issue ,he is a master,,and routing??, well, kinda too late to turn back when its done,,sounds like you've figured out what path to take tho,, very jealous too,,I go to the 12th fret also, looks like I missed it, glad you didn't,, looking forward to results.

congrats !!!
