Steve,

Complaining about not being able to post certain words on the RRF is not going to get you anywhere unless you are simply trying to stir the pot. Then of course it may actually get you somewhere.

Good luck with your search.

I'm not stirring anything Brian....and I can read between the lines... I'm just amazed at the fact that I can't say something here that a 10 year old would say anywhere else on a regular basis.....

Steve: We much prefer that any censoring that takes place is done at source. That saves us the trouble of intervening and keeps good relations at the same time. A win win.

With regard to the question at the core of this thread, were you able to find a Drop D tuner, now that I know what it is?

Yes, I could not believe that they would be around $100 US. I suspect that they work well though as the quality looks to be excellent.

I have played around with these on one of those new "retro" Stingrays. They're pretty consistent and easy to use... I don't need one myself but I can say that they definitely do their job just fine. They seem very sturdy as well.

Like I said in my earlier post, they are pretty accurate when set up and tuned properly. They come with instrucions on tuning and installation and it's no big deal to put it in. No new holes should be needed if you buy the right one.

I've used Hipshot D-tuners for years. I currently have them on several of my basses, including my '89 4003S. They work very well - the drop is always accurate, but coming back up to E always goes sharp. I give the string a little tug, and it usually goes back to correct pitch. For Rics, they used to recommend the Schaller M4 version, which obviously doesn't match the stock tuners unless you've got a 4002 or 4004, but it's not that noticeable. I guess their Ultralight version will work too. I think a dealer or eBay will have better pricing than buying direct. YMMV.

That is because you are supposed to tune the E a bit flat...flick the lever and then check it... I am no newbie to drop D tuners as I have had one on my old Fender Telecaster bass for years.

Not wishing to sound snarky, but on the few occasions I've used a drop D, I have two zero cost methods to do it.

1. Use a second bass. (Yes I know that's not technically a zero cost option, but most of us have more than one.)

2. Use the shiny turny thing connected to the headstock to adjust the pitch of the long waggly thing.

Javier, that first pic you posted looked more like drop double-D tuning.

Ain't she sexy, though?!?! I do get lots of comments on her! A friend of mine sent me that neckplate. She got it on eBay. I have another Fender I'm going to put together later...another Frankenfender...This guy can custom make the neckplates using your pics. I am thinking of sending him a pic of my two sons and having a neckplate made with a portrait of them. I think it'll turn out quite nicely.

Either one of those will work, but neither allows you to drop to D in less than a second and kick into the next song. ;) Dead air on stage is BAD!
