New Macca Interview Covers Heroin, Cocaine Use
Re: Lucy, I know there is a copy of Julian's actual drawing in "A Hard Day's Write" so my take on the saga is:
(i) Julian drew the picture (of which we have proof) and told John it's 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' - I think the aforementioned book even has a picture of the Lucy in question.
(ii) John put 1+1 together and realised it was an acronym for LSD, and wrote his trippy song about it.
In other words, Lennon's late 60s and 70s interviews where he tells the story aren't incorrect. Meanwhile, Macca's not incorrect either, as I'm strongly of the belief that Lennon's keen sense of wordplay kicked in and he had definitely made the LSD connection, no matter how much he tried to undersell it by hiding it behind a child's drawing.

Another thing I forgot to mention... with Macca about to play some teenage-friendly pop festivals in the UK, the cynic in me is wondering whether this interview wasn't just a bit calculated to project an image to 'the kids' of, "Hey, I used to be young and wild, too!" without going too far, now that he's a knight of the realm and everything...
