I had a very similar issue which drove me nuts. It turned out being the socket on the back of the speaker cab. Even though it and the cable had been replaced it was not quite making a perfect contact and was causing a slight capacitative effect. When I played softly less current went to the speakers and I would get this crackle. When I played loudly the current would punch through and the crackle would go away.

Double check all connections and solder joints.

Yes, but my music room needs an overhaul. Too many rattles and buzzes from tables, CDs, hanging pictures and just about everything else in there. The cab sounds great with the speakon connector which allows the GK head to run a separate amp to the horn, which adds some really nice definition to the highs and good atriculation all in all. The separate amps within the GK head allow me to drive the low end with some boost to get extra growl while retaining a separate signal to the horn, which stays nice and crystal clear (it's not on the overdriven signal; only the woofer is).
Can we have everything louder than everything else?
