I want to mod my 75 4001 and placing a toaster in 1/2 inch position. Anyway i noticed that i can place easily the pu in 1/2 position without the need for additional routing, and i was wondering if this is correct for a 75. Mine is a lefty so maybe the route was made the year before (as far as i know 74 is the last year of 1/2 inch basses), i also noticed that some pots are marked as 74 (but i guess this is rather common).
I guess the bass has not been routed again after production mainly because the route has the original finish in it, unless the whole bass has been refin, but i don't think so.
EDIT : where i can find a 1/2 inch pickguard for my rick ?
i've been loosely documenting the '75 basses for sale on ebay to make note on the switch from 1/2 to inch.
OB-1006 1/2
OC-1619 1/2
OD-1985 1/2
OD-2228 1/2
OD-XXXX 1/2
OE-XXXX 1"
OF-XXXX 1"
OG-XXXX 1/2
OH-XXXX 1"
OI-6259 1" (previously mine)
the OG could have been a hold over at the factory...i don't know, but i would say between april and may was the switch but does not guarranty the bass was made at a certain time ...just had the jack plate attached at a certain time. xxxx indicates the swines never offered the serial # to the auction. in theory, the factory could find a '89 manufactured 4003 under a bench in the raw...finish it and put a current jack plate on it and call it a 4003 from 2009. i doubt that would ever occur, but you get my point on holdovers. maybe the OG was changed from a 1" back to a 1/2 covertly as a selling point !
on another note...OB-1006 is an oddity. it was mapleglo and had a fretted dot neck with binding. could have been a fretless that was fretted post-factory as the bass looked original...again, who knows !
