Roger McGuinn song contest entry

Post by beatbyrd »

Finally, I have a song that's not a cover.... Roger McGuinn and Kompoz.com have a song contest where you download 7 individual tracks from Roger and use them in some original way in your own version. Then, you upload your finished product and all are judged. His tracks were from a public domain folk song called "Take this Hammer", by Leadbelly (among others).

The entries encompass lots of styles; hip-hop, rock, blues, space rock, gospel, swing, etc. Most entries play along with his original tracks - start to finish.

For my entry, I decided to write a song around his tracks, just bringing one of his choruses in (twice). It's not a typical song I'd write, but I wanted it to be as seamless a transition as possible. Two of my tracks are my 360/12, one dry and one using the JB2 for a faint Byrds-like flavor. I tried to flavor my vocals with Roger's phrasing, pronunciation, and intonation. The song is a tribute to both Roger and his website, the Folk Den Project, which is dedicated to preserving early folk songs and passing them down to younger generations.

Hopefully, this link works.....

Interesting project - cool to see how such a challenge can result in a great new tune. I thought you did a good job of emulating Roger's vocals. I could totally hear the pronunciation similarity ala 'Tamborine Man.'
