I think he quit playing it when the hi-gain was replaced by the RI horseshoe.

When did he have it refitted with the horseshoe? I saw it on the 1990(?) world tour and it still had the hi-gain bridge pickup.

The pic (pg. 235) of the bass in Beatles Gear shows it with what appears to be a RI horse shoe. Publish date is 2001.

I'm not sure. I'm surprised that there seem to be so few photos of him with that bass.

I sure wish he'd try his Cheyenne out - that is a light bass. Also, what's the big secret? I googled and googled and googled but could not find out how much a 500/1 bass weighs.

Vintage Hofners are generally in the 5 pound range. In bass terms it might as well weigh nothing.

John Hall told me of a bass they had built for Paul that looked like a 4001S, but had hollowed out wings to make it lighter, as Paul complained that the 4001S was too heavy to use live, giving him RickenBACK. Particularly odd considering that he used the Wal instead for that tour. (I had the twin to that bass. I can’t imagine anyone over 30 gigging with one. Might as well bolt a bridge, tuners, and strap buttons to a bus bench.) The hollowed 4001 bass was stolen from the factory, along with others, by an employee. I have no idea if the bass was ever recovered, but it never made its way to Paul.

With this provenance it would sure be hard to move that 4001!
