Ah, now you're talkin' my language. We are losing our critical faculties and ability to analyze, which used to be encouraged in primary and secondary education. I do thank my Catholic school education (Christian Brothers, ouch!) for bringing this type of thinking to the fore. A brief stint (one year) on the debating team and another year in a special Liberal Arts study club really gave me a hunger for knowledge and a curiosity for critique.

No question that the students I see arriving (about 200 new faces each year) are nearly totally lacking in the ability to follow a linear debate and back their claims with credible references. Most are short in critical abilities, as well, though they sure can design cool cars. They eventually realize that there's a lot more to being a professional who can hold his or her own in the design world, than the ability to sketch convincingly.

Grammar, spelling, and punctuation are an issue, where every project has one or more presentation phases. There are often winceworthy moments when I wish they wouldn't depend so much on spell check. Then there are those who don't even use spell-check. I look at them and think, "four more years and they will be looking for employment?"
