that's great to hear about the pyramids--i have never seen that they offered any alternative to the set gauge, and i would be VERY interested in finding some lighter versions, providing the prices aren't like $20-25 per string....as for the optimas,i would also be interested if they offered a chrome flatwound 40-100 gauge set, that would be similar to the maxima strings of yesteryear.....the old maximas i put on my 4000 sound pretty much perfect, flatwound punch and smoothness with a bright, but not overly metallic edge....
edit+ i just clicked on your link to juststrings ,john....and they have a similar gauge 45-100 optima set,but the price......wow. if they are made like the old ones,it might just be worth it....

I have tried many types of strings for my Rick V63 and though the RotoSound RT77 monel flatwounds were a good string, they were very stiff at standard pitch. I searched everywhere for something better and found SIT Powerflats in the same gauge ( .040--.100 ) which are actually nickel as opposed to nickel plated flatwound strings. Great feeling, great sounding, and the price is unbelievable!

Are the RotoS and the SIT Low Tension ?FabGearHead wrote:I have tried many types of strings for my Rick V63 and though the RotoSound RT77 monel flatwounds were a good string, they were very stiff at standard pitch. I would describe the RotoSound strings as high tension. The SIT strings feel comfortable and not floppy at all. Plus, being pure nickel, they have the "old sound" that I prefer.

Does anybody know who manufactured that flats that were standard on the mid-70's 4001 models? They were really nice.

What about Rotosound Tru Bass 88 ? Anyone here tried it ?
http://www.rotosound.com/tru88.html
they say they are ultra low tension.
Yes it's the opposite of a low gauge (the E string is 115 !!) but it's another choice in the field of flatwounds for rick ...

They are fun emulating upright, so if you want to play some jazz its great but thats it. Not versatile, not comfortable to play quickly (as compared to smaller strings).
Re: Low Tension alternatives to TI Jazz Flats 334
I'm using the Roto TruBass 88 black nylons right now. However, I'm on a 5er and bought the six string pack... threw out the low B (at 135) and went 115-100-75-65-50 and find them fun to play.jamespaul71 wrote:They are fun emulating upright, so if you want to play some jazz its great but thats it. Very low tension but not rubbery. I'm considering getting them for my ABG as well, six string and toss out the unneeded strings.

In website they claim they were used in recording Abbey Road by the Beatles, maybe the 88 are responsible for the fat sound in songs like Something.

iirc they, or the rick black nylon tapewounds, were used on the hofner and not the rick.cangaroo wrote:In website they claim they were used in recording Abbey Road by the Beatles, maybe the 88 are responsible for the fat sound in songs like Something.

Sadowsky makes a nickel flatwound that is similar to TIs with a tad more tension.
