Rickenbacker pickup swaps

Post by 320capt »

What Rickenbacker pickup swaps have you done or heard of?

I have seen pictures of a 650 with Vintage Pickups and a HB-1 with a toaster cover on a 350 Liverpool. For sale on Ebay a while back there was a 660/6 with an uncovered HB-1 in the bridge position. Then there was that awesome experimental Aqua Green 660 with uncovered HB-1's. I was thinking a 660/6 might be cool with an HB-1 in the bridge position with a toaster cover and a hi-gain with toaster cover in the neck position. Or would it be better to do that the other way around?

Anybody out there done something simular?

yep
In my 330 that came with mid 90s button top non adjustable hi-gains, I put various combinations of toasters, HB-1s, and even a set of the new Hi-Gains. When all was said and done, I have the toasters in there, but will probably put a new hi-gain in the neck with a toaster cover on it as that really sounded best to me of all the pickups. I found the HB-1 to be a little dark, as I was hoping for a more P94 growl or Mini-Humbucker brightness then it had, but that's just me.

Seymour Duncan makes some custom shop pickups that will fit Ricks, but they are pricey and you are pretty much married to them once you buy them. I don't know how they sound, but the normal bass replacement set they offer seems to have the majority of reviews be less than stellar. In their defense, those who like them really like them. I couldn't tell you as I've never heard them.

GFS had an inexpensive toaster type pickup for sale, but they don't sell them(that I know of)anymore, maybe due to the copyright deal. I know Suzannah Hoffs had EMGs on her signature(or 1 of)model, but I don't know if those were standard production pickups or not. Alembic made some very expensive bass ones, but I don't think any guitar ones. I also believe DeArmond had a toaster type pickup it made for a bit, but went away for legal reasons as well.

Check out the Sergios "winding up with the best" section. He can modify/fix/rewind your pickups, and has done great work for many forumites here.

I swapped the Hi-Gains in my 330 for scatter-wound toasters. And then swapped them back again. Radical huh?!?
