My new bass cabinet

I just received my Low Down Sound (LDS) custom cabinet yesterday, and have been putting it through it's paces to break it in for this Sunday's band rehearsal. Don Oatman, LDS owner, and I discussed several variations until we came up with this, a vertically aligned, 2x8" with a 6 1/2" mid/high driver. The 8" drivers are a Ciare NDC8-3, the 6 1/2" driver is an 18 Sound 6ND410.

So far, with the Markbass F1, I am delighted with it. The dimensions are 27"H x 14"W x 15 3/4"D and weights 50lbs. The bottom end from the two 8" drivers is pretty amazing, almost too much, and even with the M/H driver fully attenuated with the pad (nicely placed on the side of the cabinet to not have to reach behind the cabinet to adjust) the speakers have a nice sparkle to the high end. With the M/H driver at the "normal" setting of the pad I can get a wonderful aggressive grind to the mids and high end. This is a 4Ω cabinet so I can get the full 500 watts from the F1 if need be; it can handle the 650 watts from my Walter Woods, too.

At the moment this is the only one in existence. Come on by and try it out!

That looks very sweet. I just got a GK 212II that I've hooked up w/ a speakon cable to my GK 700 RB-II (allows a second amp in the 700 to drive a horn). I wonder how they compare? Of course, at 8Ω, I can only get 320W instead of the 480W. Unless I use my other GK 4x10 in parallel.

That is my Peterson Stroboflip tuner on top of the amp.

I am sure your 2-12 will best this little cabinet but I think the 286 can work for most gigs I do. I used to have two GK 700RB amps, the first version; they were quite nice but now I am into small, powerful, lightweight amps like my 650 watt @ 4Ω Walter Woods Super (7lbs., 12" x 3" x 8") and the 500 watts @ 4Ω F1 (4 2/3 lbs., 10.87" x 1.73" x 10").

I scored the brother cab to my Avatar 2x10 the other day. If you might recall I picked the first one up a while back and when I went back to get the other cab a few weeks later, someone had already bought it.

No huge loss, I thought.

Well, I was in there the other day and the guy who bought it brought it back.

That meant I had to buy it. You just can't let things go by twice.

Anyway, I bring this up to say this: While i was in there, they had a LDS two cab setup and we got to talking. I was told--almost in passing--that LDS was out of business.

I had forgotten that you were waiting for your LDS cab for some time (about 18 months if memory serves).

Obviously, either I was misinformed or you got the last one.

Not sure what was going on there but glad to see you got your cab. It looks nice. I had thought of turning my 2x10s on edge and stacking them (so 4 vertical 10s) and seeing how that played.

The cab that I have been waiting on since February is a Dr. Bass 2-12/6 1/2" cabinet, I am still waiting on that one, although I do know that it is slowly being built. I have a couple photos of it's construction.

The LDS 286 is something that Don and I have been talking about for a while but this only took about a month to complete. Don used to have a store front with a partner but that closed last year; Don is very much in business building great custom cabinets out of his home.

This is simply amazing Jeff. I have been researching having a Dr.Bass cabinet built myself, but have been put off by some negative feedback over at talkbass. The reports seem to be poor feedback, long waiting periods ect.....at 18 months, you might be experiencing this?

Anyway, this led me to Low Down Sound. I have been in contact with Don, and have been looking at a single 12" or 15" cab with a tweeter or a mid driver. I just need to work out the details. After seeing your cab, and reading your review, I'm pretty much sold on LDS.
