RIP James Gurley

Original guitarist for Big Brother and the Holding Company passed away yesterday from a heart attack. He was 69. :(

I saw them many years ago. The band was a very tight unit. RIP James.

I saw him in one of the reincarnations with Kathi McDonald. They are still a great band.

I thought I recognized that name in the header. We've lost a bunch of 'em this year it seems. And I can't help but wonder if there are any to take their places.

BBHC has always had a bad wrap in the media that they were not very good. For what they did with Janis they were very soulful. Really liked them!
Leprosy is rare & scarce but nobody wants that!

just now seeing this post, that is sad, i thought gurley's guitar playing in BBHC pretty much epitomized my ideal of the bay area sound.(along with jorma and the fellows in quicksilver messenger service.....)

James was one of the founding-fathers or patriarchs of the psychedelic-rock style of guitar.

I've watched (twice) a great documentary about that phase of Janis Joplin's career on the Biography channel (either that or Ovation channel). All of the surviving band members were interviewed, including James. Keep an eye out for it.
