Here is the bass as it appears today. Posting a link to it rather than upload as it's copyrighted.

I read a really good story (possibly written by Roger himself) of how he was arrested and spent the night in jail for that bass(the JG). I've never seen a FG, but maybe there was a backup bass. It's been years since I read it, but from what I remember he bought the bass while on tour in the US. He brought it back to the UK with him, but fudged the info on the customs form(s). He got caught understating the value of the bass and had to spend some time (a night?) in the slammer as a result. IIRC, they then recorded Machine Head. That story has to be floating around on the internet or on this forum somewhere.

The bass was stock for the recording of Machine Head from what I've heard and was used for the entire album.

Don't know about the jail story as I've never heard it but the rest of the info is correct. They toured the US in the fall of '71 which is when he would have purchased it. All of Machine Head was recorded w/the bass stock.

Those three color band photos look like it was right when Gillan and Glover joined, 1969. And just look at Blackmore's hair! (and no Strat yet.)

Curious thing about the date of the 4001 mod being 1974. I thought Roger Glover left the band in 1973. No wonder there are no pic's of him with it.

I would estimate the date of the photos as late Autumn '71. Blackmore still used the Gibson 335 on occasion until the Strat took over for good.

Glover left with Gillan in Summer '73.

Nice links, Ronbo. But even better yet, get a copy of the Live in Concert 72/73 dvd and there are 22-odd minutes of him playing the modded bass at Hofstra Universiy in May '73. It most certainly is JG, so I have no idea what bass that FG I posted is.

And Glover really tears it up on Strange Kind of Woman and well, all of it, really.
