The year was 1964 - The 4000 bass

Post by sashua »

I have a '64 4000 model bass and noticed that the fretboard has no lacquer.

I have seen another '64 the same way...no lacquer and no signs that there ever was any either.

Is that the way the basses were issued in 1964? Maybe just the 4000 model?

Anyone know for sure?

greetings ! you pose an interesting question. when i had my '64 4001s/rm1999 re-fretted in the mid '80's , my luthier, monty egan mentioned my bass had the original frets, but no sign of fretboard laquer had been applied. mind you mine had been stripped and re-painted '57 chevy blue so anything is possible...yes laquer/no lacquer. some other blokes on this board have '63/'64 basses in original condition...maybe they can chime in...especially vince gallo, as he only buys original condition ricks.
