What is an average weight for a Rickenbacker 4003?

Post by Jim Dandy »

Can someone tell me what the average weight is for a Rickenbacker 4003? The Rickenbacker website lists 9 lbs, but I was wondering what other people's experience has been.

Thanks!

Hi Carl, welcome. I've never really weighed one. I've sure the weight varies slightly as every piece of wood is different. I've always considered the 4003 to be about average weight for a bass guitar. The 4004 basses are noticeably lighter.
JETGLO should officially be renamed JETGLO ROCKS! :-)

Well, you got me wondering so I weighed them using an accurate scale (used for weighing bikes & bike parts). 1980 4003 is 9.45lbs and 2008 4003 is 9.40lbs. Both have bridge PU covers installed (which weigh next to nothing) and the only other difference is the 1980 has a hipshot alum bridge installed rather than original. I don't know if there's a significant weight difference between the two bridges, but it looks like "a little under 9 1/2 pounds" is a fair guess.
