Some of the 50s Ricks had large headstocks, but IIRC the headstocks were enlarged in the early 80s to accomodate the large Grover and large Schaller tuners, as it was thought that the lager tuners would cause the skinnier, er "normal" ( I agree Collin), headstocks to crack if the modern tuners were used with the small headstock. Personally, I think the keys on Schallers are boxy and unattractive, and I couldn't care less how well they work. I think my slot topped vintage style Klusons work great, and my Gotoh slot top Kluson style vintage tuners work as smoothly as Schallers-more so than even real Klusons. If I had the cash, I'd switch the tuners on every guitar I own to the slot topped Klusons or Gotohs.

Oddly enough, the only tuners I've ever had fail (become loose and lose tune, or strip), were Schallers on my '95 TUR lightshow......50 year old Klusons have held up better!
