Official Hillbilly Status Attained

Post by incubus2432 »

For the past few weeks I have been in the midst of moving from the city (more of a suburban feel but actually within city limits) to more of a country setting. We are pretty settled in and I'm back to work so I'm enjoying the change from a 19 mile roundtrip to/from work to 72 miles. On the plus side the neighbors are several hundred feet away. It is worth every second of the drive.

Our "new" (to us) house is a log home on just shy of 5.25 acres. The previous owners weren't big believers in proper repairs or maintenance so I've been busy getting things safe, sensible and "correct". The big pending project is the installation of hardwood floors throughout the house.....I've never done hardwood floor installation before so it should be a fun endeavor. There is currently a 24x40 pole barn that isn't located on a proper part of the property for my wife's horse shenanigans so it will become my car/tractor sanctuary. All it needs is a concrete floor and revamp of the wiring mess.......structure wise it is perfect and high enough for a suitable lift. A 4 stall horse barn is on the list for Spring projects......whether I build it or a crew of Amish wizards is dependent on estimates we get from the bearded craftsmen. The land is in great shape but needs some leveling and clearing to get ready for pasture fencing. Some log repair/replacement and getting rid of the peanut butter-esque stain is slated for early on as well. Lots to do! It doesn't appear that I'll have much time to lounge on the couch and watch the History Channel anymore (thank goodness for sweet, sweet TiVo).

My LK has a nice place of honor in our loft area (overlooks the living room) but I'll refrain from pics until the heinous carpet is in the dump and the new floors are in.

Fantastic, Brian! You are excused from missing MICRIO. Sounds like a lot of work ahead but worth it for your own little corner of heaven.

You hosting the next Cleveland confluence?

Congrats, cowpoke!

That third photo looks very suspiciously like one of CJs.

I suppose now you have the room (far away neighbors) to really crank up your amp. 8)

I think CJ has you beat in the tractor department.

Looks great, Brian! Congrats on the move and I hope the repairs, renovations and improvements prove to be relatively painless. :D

What a beautiful setting Brian. Take a deep breath and enjoy it all. :D

Thanks y'all!

I'm not sure it would be a suitable site for an actual confluence but it would certainly be great for the cookout-mingle-chat-booze portion of the event.

I am certainly enjoying the new digs.......even with all of the work/money involved. I'm appalled by how this house was taken care of but I also get satisfaction from repairing and restoring it to what it should be. We got a smokin' deal on the place and overall the condition is fantastic. I'm willing to overlook much of the poor upkeep because since I do 99% of the work myself the repairs are cheap and I generally enjoy doing the work. It's just frustrating to begin a minor project and find an unrelated duct tape style rig job in the process......now the minor repair stretches to several days and unexpected expense. My last home was, essentially, finished as far as house projects go......now I'm not exactly starting over but took several HUGE steps back. Mama never said I was the smart one.

CJ has me handily in tractors AND land. I am still in shock at how much even my compact tractor cost. I knew they weren't cheap but YIKES!

Oh well, off to the project of the day......the install of a water powered back-up sump system. Let the fun begin......

Hey, congrats on the new digs! Looks like a great place! Right how, I'm thinking that 5 acres would be a lot nicer than the 500 I've got...

Oh yeah, equipment is expensive, we've got somewhere around $250k tied up in equipment, and ALL of it was bought used and with lots of looking for the best deals, sometimes driving 1200 miles each way to haul it back! If you've got a new tractor, at least you won't be spending so much on the upkeep every year, that's a big chunk of change too.

I know what you mean about fixing wacky repairs and such, I run into the same thing all the time. It's amazing what some people will do to save a nickle...

Around here, this is what we consider hillbilly status. It's small, but airy.

I think I would prefer your place. Now, that is living!

Congrats, Brian!

There's much to be said for finding a place to live close enough to one's employment, but remote and quiet enough to provide a change in energy on a daily basis.

Enjoy your peace...and I hope the commute doesn't get too boring!

My in-laws have a "modern" log cabin about an hours' north of Williamsport, PA. It's on 10 acres and it's a great place to escape because there's nobody around! Congrats Brian!
