Jeffrey: A nice compromise. What about keeping the guard the same and using a push pull pot to kick in the capacitor. That way your instrument maintains the traditional look.

Whoa!! Look at this quote from Peter! Made in Feb of 2003. Isn't that 3 years before RIC started using the push-pull pot for the same purpose on the 4003?!

after discovering that cap (hey...why is that in there ? it's not on the neck pickup circuit !) and removing it from the circuit in the late '70's on my jetglo MJ-4844, i used a rotary switch in place of the treble pickup tone control, which i wasn't using anyway. there were no push/pull pots in moncton at that time, so i settled for the used rotary i found in a surplus shop. i did the same mod with rotary for a friend of mine in toronto (the brother of the guy that had his girlfriend smash his tv sets with his rickenfaker posted in the "basses of bad ronbo thread") on his jetglo '74 which mysteriously came "new" with a toaster in the neck ! i prefer the rotary as you can't accidentally knock it out of position as you can with a push/pull, but maybe some prefer to have a treble tone control in that pot. i don't need one. i do use the neck tone sometimes, so that is un-altered.

jeff said...Will my hair grow back? to this i respond...look at it this way jeff, you have far less wind resistance and spend way less shampooing and visiting the barber and purchasing combs or brushes than we do ! unless the comb comes on a 360 6/12 convertible !

I have a 4000 made in 1974, and I would never trade it for another Rick bass model. It is a killer bass, with an amazing tone that records like no other I have. It's a keeper!

In the space of time since this was first posted, the band Suede have split up, done other things, and are - I believe - reforming for some gigs soon!

I actually saw them back in 1996, and the bassman played a Precision througout.

TBH, I'm not a fan of the band, and the gig was actully quite dull!

well i've had my 74 4000 for slightly less time than this post has been around,and it has become my most favored rick bass yet. i love the sound of the toaster pickups on 4001's,but i don't really miss it,the bridge higain is great on its own. with roundwounds on,the tone can be mucho aggro,since i've put flats on it,its just brilliant...(and still aggressive sounding.....)

true...the neck pickup is for us spoiled folk. i play with the rear pickup 90 % of the time. the neck pickup is for added tone for softer noodling or sounds great digging in with some fret crunch ! yes a 4000 can stand on it's own with the kiss (keep it simple stupid) approach. i don't play with both on at the same time.

Yeah, my neck pickups have pretty much just been a decoration for the last 28 years. But still, I like having 'em there just in case!
