dear mr. jingle ...interesting to note in most if not all cases,(i have seen an early 4005 with larger walnut wings from center) if a neck has a large width skunk stripe, the walnut head stock wings are further to the outside like the mid '70's neck construction. if there is no skunk stripe, the walnut head wings are more pronounced basically going from string nut width and slightly tapering inward with the fretboard taper. so 4001 neck thru construction has a taper from the rear of the body to the top of the head stock along the taper of the fretboard, and the 4005 has the same parallel neck construction as would (wood ) a mid '70's 4001 . just an observation.
