Rubber Grommets and Pickup Height

Post by Tzurby »

I got my first Rickenbacker. A 1966 330_12. I did not know that these Ricks sound that good...

My question. The bridge PU is quite weaker than the neck PU, just due to the height. Are there rubber grommets around which are a bit thicker?

I searched this forum and the internet for a while, but in vain.

Thanks
Ulrich

How much clearance is between the pickup and the strings right now?

A 1966 330 has the vintage low end cut cap inline between the pickup and the output. This cap will decrease output (along with bass) from the pickup. It could be bypassed to increase the bridge pickup output.

Yep. Kris, the reason I asked about clearance is because low pickup output is only one of the possible scenarios. If the clearance is acceptable and stock, your advice is appropriate. If it's excessive, we've got a bridge height issue, which translates to a backbow or neck set issue.

My typical way to approach this kind of problem is to begin with the most obvious/cheapest solutions. Hence my nebulous question.

Thanks for your comments. There is a low end cut cap indeed. I took it out. And I installed some higher grommets. They can be found in any electronics store.

Sounds great now. The volumes are pretty much the same. The thinner sound wasn't bad either. Pretty special. Maybe I switch back.
