Rickenbacker-branded automobiles?

Post by sloop_john_b »

From Guitar Aficionado magazine, Vol 1, No. 3, page 52:
"...And then there's the recently signed agreement between Rickenbacker International Corportation and Japan's Mitsuoka Motors that allows the automaker to produce Rickenbacker-branded cars -- a fascinating move that effectively reverses the traditional flow of influence between the guitar and auto industries (although a Rickenbacker Motor Company existed from 1921-1927, it was not related to the guitar company that Adolph Rickenbacker helped launch in the Thirties). It will be fascinating to see whether Mitsuoka opts for its classic Morgan-inspired design or one of its more modern supercar concepts for the Rickenbacker-branded cars, and if the automaker will incorporate any design elements inspired by the guitars (checkerboard pin stripes, cats-eye vents and cresting wave tailfins, perhaps?)"
Cars, yet still no 360F?

I think that there's an older thread about this, with a link to a page showing the cars (or artist's conception of them) ... :)

From the above link:

"The special models of the Orochi and Himiko cars are designed around a Rickenbacker theme, including wood-tone interior panels reminiscent of guitars, real leather seats embroidered with guitar tailpieces and strings, and the Rickenbacker emblem below the indicator lever.

The new Orochi and Himiko cars will be built to order, limited to five units each, and will be priced at 9.48 million yen and 6.32 million yen, respectively. The cost is around 700,000 yen more expensive than Mitsuoka's regular models."

At five each for roughly $100,000, it's not like you're going to be saying, "There goes another one!"

Well, it was sort of related...

Eddie started the Rickenbacker Motor Company and Eddie and Adolph were cousins (or was it second cousins?)

Beautiful cars. And very sporty for the time. From what I understand over 11,000 Rickenbacker autos were built.

I'm pretty sure the example below featured headlights and front fenders that moved with the front wheels when the steering wheel was turned.
