Frets

Post by me_and_i »

I was wondering if rickenbacker put finish on their necks after they put the frets on? Because on my 325 there's on al the frets finish. And an other thing about the frets: they file them on the right hight but they didn't put them round again after that I do found this a bit poorly for an otherwise high quality/top class guitar.

Not quite sure what you mean by "put them round again" but anyway our particular style of fret work has been a bit of a signature, this way for over 50 years.

It sounds to me like he is asking if the frets are put in before the neck has finish put on it, and then if the frets are recrowned after they are dressed flush. It also sounds like he is insinuating that his guitar was not done this was and that the frets were not recrowned after being levelled?

My impression is that Rickenbacker puts the frets in, finishes the neck, including lacquering the fingerboard and frets, dresses the frets flat, then recrowns them so the frets have a slightly round surface to them where the string contacts them? Is that assumption correct John?

Generally, when I've seen new Rickenbackers in stores, the fretwork and setup are excellent, although I have seen brand new Ricks in stores, usually Guitar Center, where there is a problem with the setup. But then most brand new guitars should be setup for the player after purchase anyway since any guitar maker can't setup a guitar for everyone's tastes.

When I got my 360V64 there was a buzz that wouldn't go away. I gave it to the tech and told him that it must be either the nut or the bridge.
I got it a few days later with no buzz and it ended up being a bridge saddle that had a slight burr in it.

The sad part - before he found the bad saddle, he did a complete fret-dress, just to be sure. The first thing I noticed was that the frets were round, when they used to have a square profile. I never realized the profile was a Ric signature until they were shiny and round.
Still - It plays like a dream.
I'm sure that Stew-Mac has fret files with different profiles, don't they?
