Charles, you are raising the bar.

Now it's 30 posts of 500-word count each -- and emoticons don't count!

Charles, in your pursuit of 30 posts to gain access to the marketplace you need to be careful that your views are not seen as being somewhat antagonistic and over the top. Posts that border on preaching about corporate policies or political statements will eventually get you into serious hot water with those of us who manage the board.

Before you make a post, please take a moment to consider how you may be perceived. Especially when it is a post like the one where you felt the urge take a stand over a sticker that is purportedly made offshore. Consider the potential downside to posting what amounts to be a rant. It may not be worth it in the long run.

Interestingly, the most common MADE IN USA labels are sold by everybody, from label distributors to Staples and Office Depot.

I wonder where these are made?

I understand what you are saying totally. It's a sticker, no big deal.

But I get the general feeling that no one here is allowed to voice ANYTHING even slightly negative about Rickenbacker. Is that correct? Because NOTHING in life in 100% perfect. Nothing.

Don't get me wrong, I love Rickenbacker guitars and I am new here so I don't know much. It's just the feeling I've gotten. But if that is the case, no big deal. I have no business at all telling anyone how to run a board. Just wondering.

Let's just say that we try not to be negative about the company and its products. Peter's way of putting it could be paraphrased as: "We're here to celebrate Rickenbacker instruments." I think we all try to keep this in mind. There are a lot of egos that prop themselves up by harsh critique or sniping, often without having (or caring to have) good information upon which to base their negative comments.

There are also lots of "Flying Dutchman" websites that run eternally without ever being guided or run unmoderated, and these seem to be the province of people with personal axes to grind in order to aggrandize themselves or trick themselves into thinking their criticisms have validity.

I am happy to be positive while still maintaining a realistic approach. Disseminating bad information or attitudes accomplishes nothing except to maybe make the disseminator feel important.

IMO it's better to feel genuinely useful, and to feel useful among friends.

Ok, thanks for the detailed explaination. That completely makes sense.

I know what you are saying about the "Flying Dutchmen" message boards. I've seen plenty of those.

Brian let's put this all into perspective. No man, woman and/or no corporate entity is perfect. We try to focus on the positives of Rickenbacker instruments and the artists associated with them as much as possible on this forum. We do not stifle discussion unless it is in contravention to our established rules.

Discussion (based on well known, proven or publicly acknowledged facts) where there is an issue with a product or an an artist is able to take place within the bounds of good taste and of course our rules.

My post had more to do with how our members perceive a newcomer to the board, as that may effect whether or not they want to do business with a new member, particularly if the new member is the potential seller. Transactions here are mostly based on trust and that trust has to be earned.

As they say in the legal community, perception is 9/10ths of the law.

I though it was, "possession is 9/10ths of the law", along with, "he who has the gold, makes the rules..."?

That is one of the other sayings Paul and that is also true.

Cuz

Perhaps the expression that I mentioned is worthy of some further explanation.

Many litigators now find themselves in the position of also being professional communicators. In that regard, that expression has been adopted by the legal community as they know that is it harder to mount a defence where the perception of a crime is heavily weighted towards the Crown's case against their client. I used the descriptor "Crown" in this case, since my experience with working with members of the legal community is strictly Canadian.

Thanks for the very interesting discussion here. I would argue that while talk may be cheap, the price of hurt feelings often comes at great expense.

The RickResource Forum learned its lesson well when creating alt.guitar.rickenbacker. Unmoderated, a very small number of self-centered persons ruined the experience for all.

This site celebrates the history of Rickenbacker and its fine instruments of yesterday and today. Had it not been for the very kind efforts of RIC, many committed volunteers and some basic rules we would not have been able to create the RRF. This approach has limited our exposure to those who critique without reason. For those who continue share their knowledge and their patience in the most positive of ways, long may you run.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

Ok, thanks for the clarification. I totally understand what you are saying. Being new here I wasn't exactly sure how things were, but it makes a lot more sense now.

Holy moly...

My post generated more posts than the rest of the thread combined.

I have to say I don't quite understand the implied criticism of my post. I want to buy a Rickenbacker. There was apparently a problem with scammers joining the board, so they implemented a rule, first requiring 100 posts but then later relaxing that to 30 posts. I've been kind of scratching my head trying to figure out what to post about as I've never even played a Ric, except maybe a bass for 30 seconds 30 years ago. I love the Beatles, so I've made a few posts in that forum.

When Paul posted about the stickers being made in China, I finally felt like this was something that I know about. I am the founder of a small manufacturing company, probably not to dissimilar from Rickenbacker in many ways. So I finally had a chance to post on something that I have first-hand knowledge of. We make a big effort to source things from the USA, and I wrote about that. If I ever get to 30 posts and want to buy a guitar, do you really think someone is going to examine all of my posts and then like the Soviet Politburo, decide that that post was not "politically correct" and refuse to sell me the guitar? Especially because I made another post saying that I was glad that Ric was still building their guitars in the US and that the sticker was really not that big of a deal...

But I stand by what I posted before. I'm sure that a roll of 5000 stickers goes for around $100. I would be glad to buy a roll like that for Ric. Then they could say "100% made in the USA".

All of this is based on Paul's post saying that the stickers were made in China. Maybe he was joking, although he hasn't confessed to that. Maybe he doesn't know, although he comes across as someone who would know. If my post was based on an erroneous assumption, please accept my apologies, and go back to whatever you were doing before.
