Charles: It is good that you have been able to voice your opinion. It will be very interesting to see what model of Rickenbacker you choose after your research and discussion here. We will help you find the Rickenbacker of your dreams. :)

Thanks for your vote of support!

I've more or less picked out my guitar already. It's kind of a funny story. I'm 54 now and was paralyzed in an accident 4 years ago. I'm in a wheelchair now and it's hard for me to play guitar. But when I was young I used to play and collect guitars. (If I still had all the guitars I went through, I'd be a millionaire today!) My friends and I were totally focused on Gibsons and Fenders. My main guitar "hero" was Jimi, so of course I had to have a Strat. Even though I was also a huge Beatles fan, I never paid any attention to the guitars they played (except for George' rosewood Telecaster and "cherry-top" Les Paul in "Let It Be").

But a few years before my accident I realized that my hands were relatively small, and vastly smaller than Jimi's. So I got a Mexican Duo-Sonic (Fender's 3/4 size guitar) on eBay for $100 or so. I actually loved the guitar. The neck was as built as well as any pre-CBS Fender I ever played, and the short scale was perfect for my small hands. I just wished that it was a little bit "nicer", with some of the features of Fender's more expensive guitars.

I was completely shocked a couple of months ago to find out that the 325 Ric's had an even shorter scale than my Duo-Sonic (20.75" versus 22.5"). I had no clue that they were 3/4-sized guitars! So even though I can't play one much, I still want one. Especially since my 10 year old son is starting to learn guitar. And his hands are half the size of mine! He can barely play the Duo-Sonic. So I want to get a 325. I'd prefer to get a thinner one. So not a 'V59 or 'C58. But just about anything else -- a 'V63 or 'C64 or even any regular 325 between 1964 and 1998. I've been watching eBay for a while. There was one from 1980 that went for a reasonable price. I didn't bid high on that one because the heel of the neck was much larger than normal and limited access to the top frets. Then there was a 'V63 that I almost bought, but the owner didn't really want to sell it and it sounded like it might need a re-fret. Currently there is a 'C64 but the owner is asking a the price of a new instrument for it. I have made an offer, but he came back with a counter offer that is quite high -- many hundreds more than what the 'C58's have been bringing lately (which is what started this thread).

Sooner or later I'm sure that I'll get what I'm looking for. I don't know if there are any 325's on the Marketplace forum here. I'm getting close to 30 posts, so soon I'll be able to take a peek!

Charles: There are also some sweet sounding Rickenbacker lapsteels that might suit you as well.

Thanks very much for the kind wishes! Kiramdear, I hope you don't have a spinal cord injury in common with me -- that's something that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy...

As far as a lapsteel, I don't really have time to learn a new instrument. But I do have to say that some of David Lindley's work on a lapsteel is unbelievable! I was fortunate enough to see him play with El Rayo X back in the '80s.

The problem is that I don't have any trunk control. So if I don't hold myself up with my hands or forearms, I topple over. Sometimes I'll lean on the guitar to play but I can only do it for about ten minutes before it starts to cause problems. But there are some fantastic researchers working on spinal cord repair. They have it figured out on rats and just need to transfer the technology to humans. So I'm hopeful that in a few years they will have a cure. And if they do, then I'll have a bitchin' guitar to play. (Assuming that my 10 year old doesn't take it over!)

Charles, I hope your recovery goes in the best possible direction for you. I suffer since three years ago from constant and severe back and neck pain caused by arthritis and nerve damage. There's more but I try not to feel too sorry for myself, seeing as I'm still on my feet.

I also love the short-scale Ricks and have two of them. Their ease of playing lets me spend more time in the saddle.

And I'll be 54 this year. :)

So tell the kid hands off and don't count you out of the game yet.

Cheers and best wishes! :)

Charles, like you and Kira, I'm a HUGE fan of short-scaled guitars.

The information re: the stickers being made in China came was posted by John Hall on this very Forum maybe 2-3 years ago.

Now, as to whether HE was kidding, I'll let you decide.

Yikes, I'm sorry to hear about that. And I know from first-hand experience that there just aren't any good pain meds for long-term pain. I've tried acupuncture, massage, cranio-sacral work, laser treatments, and just about everything with extremely limited results. I've come across some great therapies for many people, but nothing that might help you, I'm very sorry to say. Maybe self-hypnosis. That and guitar playing! :) Hang in there...

Go ahead and spoil yourself! I just joined the club. The seller on eBay accepted my (too high) offer. So by the end of next week I should be the proud owner of a 'C64. Looking forward to trying out that short scale myself!

Nah, nothing makes me prouder than when the kids play music. They've been taking violin lessons since the third grade and they are extremely musical. The older one has learned the bass parts to a half-dozen Beatles songs. Now the young one is learning the guitar part to "All My Loving". I was trying to show him barre chords at first, but he couldn't play them because of his small hands. (I didn't realize that John was playing four-string "banjo" chords at first.) So we learned George's solo with the help of some great YouTube videos, and then we learned the chords the way John plays them. (Look up "mjsokes" on YouTube for 80 killer Beatles instructional videos.) The coolest thing is that they can sing the vocal and the harmony while they are playing! In my book, that merits some time with the Rick.... :)

As noted above, I bought the 'C64 from eBay. I'm looking forward to trying out the short scale for myself. I have to say that the $100 Mexican Duo-Sonic was probably my all-time favorite guitar, just because of that short scale. So it will be interesting to have an even shorter scale with a quality guitar -- made in USA and 3 pickups and nice parts everywhere. But I'm sure that with my luck next week there will be another one just like it for $500 less...

Regarding the sticker, I bet anything he was kidding! So my big rants were probably kind of stupid in retrospect.

And now that I've bought a Rick, this will make my 30th post and I'll finally get to see if there are any Rick's for sale -- that I don't need any more! :)

Well even though you hit the magic milestone and bought a guitar fairly quickly, stick around Charles. I like your style............... :D

Ah but stick around long enough, and there'll probably be another one you'll lust want.

With all due respect, $1900 is just the minimum bid. The final price could be more . . . wait and see.

That will be mine in 4 days.

;-)

Well maybe. I will be bidding to win on that one.

BTW, I offered Mr. 325 needing a fret job $2,325 for that Rickenbacker. He turned me down.
