Haven't seen them with these before. Probably borrowed.

They did a few TV shows in the '80s with live vocals but the music being on tape, this being oine of those.
Hence the borrowed instruments, I would assume.

There is also a classic playback performance of Losing My Religion from French TV in 1991, where Bill "plays" bass and Mike "plays" drums.

There's a better quality version available on YouTube somewhere... couldn't find it, maybe it's already removed.

Exception being Rockpalast, of course, as they were playing instruments as well as doing live vocals there.
At Rockpalast they were using different instruments as well, though... too much hassle to take them to the tv appearances?

Sure, the playback was for tv shows where they played one or two songs. I assume the shows demanded full playback and lip-synch, but Michael refused to lip-synch, so only instruments were on tape.

Not sure what you mean regarding the instruments at Rockpalast, it's all their standard gear there.

Sorry, I should've been a bit more clear there; Peter's guitar is not his usual 360 Jetglo. I'm no expert on Mike's basses, but wasn't his bass lighter in colour - the one at Rockpalast seems to be all black (maybe just me or lack of lighting in the studio)?

Might've been the other thread, but someone mentioned the Raleigh footage from 1985 - does anyone know what happened to Peter's Fenders? In Raleigh he uses at least two different - I though he once said he'd wrecked his black Tele and went out to get another guitar, which is when he got the 360.

The black 360 wasn't used on that many songs in 1985 in general, as can ben seen in both the Raleigh, Alabamahalle and Rockpalast videos. It is certainly their standard gear of that year they're using in any case. Mike's 4001 was JetGlo (black) and I'm pretty certain it's regular one he's using in Rockpalast (after he breaks the Guild midway through the set).

As for Peter's teles, he had a few very early on, there are pics of him with both a butterscotch one and a custom, I think, from 1980-1981. That was also around the time when he bought the Rick. The black tele was used quite a bit in 1984-1985, but then didn't really resurface until in 2008 when he used it on Ignoreland. It's one he using in Pretty Persuasion above.

More info on Peter's gear over the years can be found on the other Rickenbacker forum. I've posted some info in this thread:

Thanks for clearing that up, David! Plus, a big thanks for the link as it's a good read about Peter's gear; a nice consize encyclopedia of Peter's gear if I may say so - ever thought of adding it to Wikipedia's Peter Buck page?

Regarding the 340 @ Rockpalast - I think it looks like a 6 string based on the look of the back of the headstock - there appear too few keywinds for it to be a /12?

Maybe you do know the answer to the following as well, as I've not been in the position to ask Peter myself yet:
Peter plays a Midnightblue Rick bass (soz, I can't keep those 4000-series basses apart) from time to time. Now I know Scott has a Mapleglo, but is the Midnightblue bass Scott's or Peter's?

Werner,

David and I had this discussion on the other Rickenbacker forum. In my opinion, the guitar Peter plays for the Rockpalast show is most definitely a 6-string (as you noted, it doesn't have the 12-string headstock, and, what's more, it doesn't SOUND like a 12.) If you really want to see some great live footage of Peter playing his jetglo 360/12, check out the 1985 Raleigh show on You Tube. Peter plays the 360/12 on three songs: "Talk About the Passion," "So. Central Rain," and "Good Advices." No question about that: you can see the headstock clearly, and you can hear the octave strings chiming out.

I saw REM in Philly somewhere around 1988 or so with 10,000 Maniacs and I'm pretty sure I remember Peter Buck bringing out a black Tele for a song or two - might have been for Strange and maybe Hyena (not really sure on that), but who can remember? But I guess it's easier to remember the songs he DIDN'T play a Rick with, when you're a Rick fan! But there was a black Tele. And I just remembered that they did Midnight Blue (great rendition, of course!) and the Tele might have been used on that.

Would have been this show:
16 October 1987 - Spectrum Theater, Philadelphia, PA
support: 10,000 Maniacs
set: Finest Worksong / These Days / Welcome To The Occupation / Pilgrimage / Disturbance At The Heron House / Exhuming McCarthy / Orange Crush / Feeling Gravitys Pull / King Of Birds / Tired Of Singing Trouble / I Believe / Oddfellows Local 151 / It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) / Begin The Begin / Strange / Fall On Me / Crazy / 1,000,000
encore 1: John The Revelator / The One I Love / Midnight Blue-I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For-Addicted to Love / Radio Free Europe
encore 2: Harpers / So. Central Rain
encore 3: Wolves, Lower
notes: Natalie Merchant guests on John The Revelator

The Tele should have been the custom we have previously discussed in this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=11&t=391989
And on the other forum, here:
http://www.rickenbacker.com/forum_view_ ... ly%20R.E.M

Interesting to hear it was used in 1987 still.
