This guitar sure could cause a lot of confusion in these parts...

it totally DID for me for a few years wondering what the hell RIC model that was! haha...i guess it was the Original townshend model "Ric."
i will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, de-briefed, or numbered.
Re: Pete Townsend and the Rickenbacker
I still like the headstock on that guitar with the Rick TRC on it, nice flow the the shapes.

Re: Pete Townsend and the Rickenbacker
Very similar to the Rick acoustic "Batwing", "Steers' Horn", "Fish Tail" acoustics. The Rick headstocks, though, are much more flamboyant in profile.

For some reason, an offset toaster bugs me...while an offset single coil is fine. Brains are weird things. Especially when they're in my head.
Re: Pete Townsend and the Rickenbacker
That pic of Pete's guitar perfectly illustrates why RIC guards the TRCs the way they do.

Re: Pete Townsend and the Rickenbacker
October/November '66, Quick One sessions. Hendrix came in to find out what gear the band were using. Pete suggested to him Fender guitars (as we should know, Jimi chose a Strat), and Jimi saw the Marshall stacks Pete was using. A few weeks later, at the Bag O'Nails, the entire Who went to see Hendrix perform. Pete said Jimi had not only taken his suggestions, but his stage routine and smash-up routine, too. This is why in mid '67, Pete switched to Sound City amps, who later became Hiwatt, and made the switch from Strats to Gibson SGs.

I think that story may be stretching a little...check here for some info on Hendrix.

Re: Pete Townsend and the Rickenbacker
Yeah, and Townshend owed Marshall a ton of money. I think that had more to do with it than anything else. Why would you not use the brand that you help put on the map due to your ideas? I don't think Pete switched to Gibsons on Jimis behalf, he's too arrogant to change his ways back then for anyone. I think it had more to do with how an SG with P90s sounds through a cranked Hiwatt more than anything else.lennon211 wrote:JakeK wrote:October/November '66, Quick One sessions. AFAIK, Hendrix was using or had used a Strat long before he ever went to England.
Re: Pete Townsend and the Rickenbacker
The site that I linked above has info on Jimi's guitars and details his early use of Fenders (Duo-Sonics and Jazzmasters) before his purchasing his first Strat in the summer of '66 while still in NY.
