TRC Lengths

Post by ricmic »

I had looked again at Teds anatomy threads. In particular, the one on TRCs. He quotes 5"15/16 length as the norm. My question to this august body is how long are the vintage plexi TRCs, say on the V63s? Mark

You mean on the vintage reissue TRCs? Too Long.

Sorry, I don't have any measurements on me, though.

The TRCs on my '67 4005WB and '73 4001 are both different lengths and both are shorter than the RI TRCs.

I agree. Too long for a 70's 4001 or an 80's/early 90's 4003. Someone here bought a V63 TRC and shortened it and the results turned out very nice though.

I happen to have a V63 TRC right here with me. And a ruler! Mine measures exactly 6 5/8" from the tip to the G side corner.

Another problem with fitting the V63 TRC to a 4003/4001 headstock is the tuner placement. The RI TRC is fatter and tends to hit the tuner ferrules.

What did you want to put the V63 TRC on?

Jeff, the truth is, I don't want to put the RI TRC on my 99 V63. I would rather have the short TRC as I don't care for the size of the RI on the later model head stock. I do. however want plexi. I'm just feeling around here, trying to get some options. Mark

It's OK Collin, the bass is with Jingle_Jangle, and I am not at the point yet that will require action. I am heartened to hear that, when the time comes, I may enjoy some options. Thanks again. Mark

Jingle Jangle might be able to shorten yours for you Mark. A 70's TRC would require drilling at least 1 new hole in your headstock (for the screw at the tip).

And while I'm at it...My Jan '71 4001 TRC measures 6 1/8" from G side corner to tip,

and my July '73 4001 TRC measures 5 13/16" from G side corner to tip.

Both are the original plexi TRC's.

Ah, yes....good point. I totally forgot.

Along with different lengths come different screw hole placements (and the smaller TRCs don't cover up the old footprint).

I have a plexi (not sure if it's RI or original - got it from a friendly luthier's part box) - too long for a 78 4001 and waaaay to much of a curve - would have to be trimmed to not sit on a tuner ferrel.

Anyone ever start a database of tracings so if someone, well, like me, needs to find one on ebay, he/she (he, in my case) can get one that fits without having to ship it back to Ric and shell out $50 bucks to get one that does?
