For what you paid I'd go the sand and tung oil route like Dane suggested or take my time and give it a rattlecan job.........certainly not Paul W. quality but with patience passable results are possible. Keep it a budget RIc and enjoy!

Great find. I'll give you $130.00 for it and pay for shipping.
Seriously Chris, its not conversion varnish, but I've used this stuff in the past with great results.

I like the satin finish aerosol, I had a similar find years ago, and this was the end result:
It was a trashed '76 4001 with screwed rods, no finish, and missing hardware. I converted it to a "Deluxe 4001". Played it for a while and eventually sold it to our own Paul Wilczinski.
I've always wondered if he ever got around to turning into one of his wonderful pieces of art. How about that Paul? I never got around to asking.

Congrats! What a find!

Nice score. If it is latex paint just apply some denatured alcohol with a rag and it most likely will come off.

Great score Chris... must be all that good clean living you do...???

Is it OK to use a hand held electric vibrating sander to remove the paint on this, what grit, and is this too aggressive to strip it?
Re: Look-ee what I got today for $125
I just used a hand held sander to remove the finish from an old 2030 body I had lying around. I started with 160 grit and then finished it off with 240. I hate chemical strippers. If you have to wear a mask and gloves to use it, then there's really no place safe you can dispose of it.

The sides are hilarious - it's like the fastest loss of interest in a project I've ever seen. One sloppy swipe with a paintbrush and "ok, that's good, I'm done"
Or was it sanded off partially?
Great find, btw.

Wow, definitly a great bargain!
Any ideas for a refin or not? If so, what finish would you go for?

No sanding. That's the finished painted product. Maybe a Punk band?robbo63 wrote:The sides are hilarious - it's like the fastest loss of interest in a project I've ever seen. One sloppy swipe with a paintbrush and "ok, that's good, I'm done"

Going to see what it looks like when I strip it, but leaning towards repainting.Grainger wrote:Wow, definitly a great bargain!

Use a nylon bristled brush this time
Re: Look-ee what I got today for $125
that's fantastic chris-i love fixer uppers, and it sort of gives one license to think outside the box on color choices for the refin. ( i have this long standing desire for a salmon pink 4000,but i would have to find one that was in similar condition to yours) Have fun with it!
