Question about early 4001v63 cases

Post by Jim Dandy »

Could someone tell me what style of case was used for the early (around '88-'89) 4001v63 basses? I thought it was the silver tolex that I've seen on the later v63 models, but have recently seen it described as a special edition black tolex case.

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure I've seen some of the early ones in a case just like this case that my '94 4003S came in:

I have other Ricks from the late 80's and early 90's that came in similar cases as well. Sturdy, tough cases. Black tolex, plastic handle, Cheney lock/latches. They look like the late 70's/early to mid 80's cases on the outside, but are lighter and have no form-fit surround inside like the silver re-issue cases.

My Ric is a 97... I don't know if it came with this case originally, but it has the form fit interior, cheney locks ect. It's a nice case. It has some tears and scuff and wondered if it would be worth getting it recovered. I do like it alot

I got this second case on ebay. It is tweed and doesn't have the form fit interior, but allows me to keep the pick up cover on as the other case does not,but this tweed case isn't as well made as the other and the latches aren't cheney and while they do the job, they aren't as sturdy. I just got it because it was cheap on ebay and looks cool, but the black case is much better.
