Has to be the pistols for me.A moment in time that cut through all, like a straight razor through flesh this was the definitive moment for UK punk. However many would also say that it was not. I always do find it strange that when an act reaches critical acclaim that people dont think they are quite as cool as they were before success.

Ditto; Pistols. I don't know that anyone else ought to ever even attempt that song. The combination of buzz saw voice and buzz saw guitar are perfect.
Re: Battle of versions — Anarchy in the UK
No one can outdo the original in this case, including Johnny himself. But I was ROFL for Jools & Adrian. Ranieros a close second for second.
All I wanna do is rock!

Nothing comes close to the original. Even though the video is lip-synched, it is livelier than all the rest. I love the single version of this song. Glenn's bass playing is outstanding. The first time I heard it (being accustomed to the album version) was a revelation. It kills me how fresh this song sounds 30 years later.
The Megadeth version is dull.
The Motley Crue version is so contrived as to be laughable.
The BOOWY version is just another ****** bar band, and the phonetic pronunciation leaves me cold.
The PiL version is good, but Johnny appears to be doing it for maximum irony, like a joke that only he gets.
The Jools version is funny for the first verse (and you have to admire that orchestra).
The Rainieros is the best of the covers.
The RHCP is unavailable.

What he said!

There is only 1 version, all that other stuff is just so missing the point. John Lydon(Rotten) had such a unique snarl and voice, you just can't do it any other way. You can nail the music(which baffles me why none of these bands has)but you can't sing the songs without sounding like a poor imitation, or completely changing the vibe of it. Just one mans highly subjective opinion.

PIstols, hands down! But that Adrian Edmondson is fantastic.
I saw that PiL is coming to my town later this month. Does anybody know if they still put on a good show?

I guess it has to be the Pistols in their 15 minutes of credibility (like they caaaarrrer maaan).
I've got a soft spot for Ade Edmondson after seeing him live with the Bad Shepherds when they did strange things to some of my favourite songs! -
