I've never seen that guitar before, surprisingly. I wonder if it was his, as if he did own it, he never played it out much. It's also not listed on his guitar site (well, a fan's guitar site for him) : http://smithsonguitar.blogspot.com/2008 ... -gear.html

His famous JG 330 is a six string.
Nice vid Thomas, and interesting site Colin. Cheers.

Here's a few of shots of his 360-12 JG, plus another FG 360-12 I've only seen once - from his time with Talking Heads.

Is it me, but the bloke in the fourth picture does not look like Johnny?

It's Johnny, Trav -as he appeared in the Talking Head 1988 video for 'Nothing But Flowers' (a GREAT song). One of the coolest-looking Ric 12s ever in my opinion.

Can't find the official clip on youtube, but here's the song:

I think I like "Headmaster Ritual" better as an instrumental...

Nice playing - that certainly does make a fine instrumental. I do like the "...military two-step down the nape of my neck" vocal hook, though...so much of the rest is typical teen angst that I've very much grown out of.

I've always thought that 'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now' would be vastly improved if the vocal track were eliminated. There's some amazing guitar layering going on in that song.

Radiohead did a righteous version of 'The Headmaster Ritual'.

Yeah, that's a great cover. Rick-less, but great:

Yeah, the music seems so powerful, and then you liten to it again with the vocals and blah, clutters it up and wrecks it. A lot of the singing is right over the riffs that really make the music fantastic. It would have been better to leave a space in the vocals to let those parts stand out more!

It's interesting... the reason that it's like that, is Johnny and Andy and Mike recorded everything as instrumentals and in many many cases had absolutely no idea what Morrissey would come in with the next day. There were exceptions obviously, but for the most part they worked that way. I think this might contribute to the really dense overdubbed sound.. because they made the songs sound like polished instrumental pieces as they were, before Moz even made it to the studio.

This early run through of Shoplifters Of The World is one of the only studio instrumental tracks that have ever been leaked:

Oddly enough, Morrissey was a big fan of their instrumentals. His ego was/is HUGE, but he (if my fanzine memory is correct) fully supported tracks such as this:

Johnny described this as "car chase music", hehe. :)
