Excellent Jack!
As a former Guitar/Bass player (my axe was a FG '79 4001), I gained a tremendous amount of respect for Sir Paul. It took a lot of work for me to be able to sing and play on "I Saw Her Standing There". He really brought a songwriters perspective to Bass; incorporating elements of both melody and rhythm into his playing.
When I played in my first duo, we experienced the same problem with "Brown-eyed Girl" I prided on learning both the bass and lead (which is full of double-stops and runs). Problem was, I couldn't play either AND sing-and neither could my partner. We ended up with me playing bass ("cause I played it like the record) and he played the intro riff and a few of the "essential" licks, but mostly strummed chords and sang. It never sounded right to me, but it was a heavilly requested number, so I guess it worked.
I've never heard any compromise in Sir Pauls live work.
