Saw Roger McGuinn last night!

Post by britinvasion »

I went to see Roger last night at a venue just a few miles from where I live. What an amazing performance. Started out with the chords to My Back Pages ringing out as he walked onto the stage strumming his Rick 12. Over the course of the evening he spoke about the various influences that led up to what he did with the Byrds ,demo'ing different playing styles and singing. Among the many tunes he played were Chestnut Mare , Mr. Tambourine Man , an incredible workout on 8 Miles High , Mr. Spaceman (!) Bells of Rhymney.
A real high point for me was when he came for an encore. He went into So You Wanna be a Rock'n Roll Star and finished with Turn Turn Turn , a very moving performance. All in all , a magical night. :D

You're quite fortunate to have had the pleasure of seeing him. Someday I hope to have that experience, too. Thanks for posting.

Was this McGuinn by himself, as has been the case for so long?

Sure love to see him tour with a full band......thanks for the post---if he ever gets back down south here, I'm going to see him.

I suspect that his days of touring with a full band are quite passed. He seems to be quite happy returning to his folk roots, playing small venues, etc. The overhead would certainly be lower.

He was by himself , but honestly the performances were so mesmerizing that at the end of the night I would have sworn he had a band with him. He explored / explained his roots , but also did full-blown performances of the Byrds tunes I mentioned on his Rick. It was really amazing , way more so than I had expected.

Check out my post regarding YouTube videos in this subforum. You can pretty much 'replay' the concert that you just saw. Most of his stock stuff is on these videos, that were shot last October, at a McGuinn concert in Malibu, CA.

I wish he would come to Houston. I saw him about twenty-five years ago playing his Martin 12-string, and it was a terrific show. Afterward I got to meet him, and he was very nice, quite gracious, and answered all of my questions (which were mostly about his playing technique).

Somewhere there is a page with all sorts of information about McGuinn and his various Rickenbackers that used photos to pinpoint just when his first 360/12 was stolen. It even had a timeline showing when he used each guitar. Does anybody happen to have a link to that page?
