Actually I think John considered himself *precisely* "Nowhere."

I'd give this film a look.

I've just watched this movie. Excellent live re-creation of the famous photo of the Quarrymen on the back of the flatbed truck. If you don't know much about John's history, it's a very slow film. For beatle-enthuses, this is a very good film. Intsruments appear authentic as well.

I enjoyed the film too - although I agree you need to go into the film knowing something of John's biography in order for it to work....

Julia and Aunt Mimi steal the film in my opinion....

He was in Liverpool though...I like the city but it's apparently a much nicer place than it was up until 15 or so years ago.

Is 'Nowhere Boy' the first to go so far back into John's teen years?

Nope - "In My Life" covered this exact same time period, and was shot in Liverpool and everything.

Also, we all know there was a lot going on in JL's heart and mind, but I don't know if I'd call his upbringing a "hard life." He lived in the suburbs, y'all. He didn't go hungry.

A feeling of abandonment from his natural parents? Surely. But not slum life.

Yeah I was there in '81, a spooky ghost town except for a couple of wild looking punk rockers walking around.
And I gather John probably had the highest quality of life out of the four of them as a kid, all things considered.
I'll not go out of my way to see yet another "Saint John" flick. This John was cool, Mac was a fluff thing is way old and way off, IMO.

Paulie is played by Thomas Sangster, who played the love-struck son of Liam Neeson in "Love Actually," and the eldest child in "Nanny McPhee." He grew up quickly; 20 now.

Does anyone know if this film had a general release?
I know I've left it a bit to late, however, I haven't heard that the film was released in my neck of the woods,( Cleveland Ohio area).
Please advise if possible.

It was released but Blockbuster doesn't have it yet.

Some reviews:

It's a handsomely made film, with a very game lead performance from Johnson,

a thoroughly engaging depiction of John Lennon's teenage years.

A barren soap opera of a film that puts more emphasis on Lennon's mood swings than what made his music so great.

There are brief moments when Nowhere Boy takes your breath away, when the frisson of future knowledge sends a shiver down the spine. But they’re outweighed by the melodrama and the politesse of this disappointingly toothless biopic.

Ignore the Lennon and Beatles intrigue in Nowhere Boy and the story doesn't carry much inspiration. The end result is a dreary, slight biopic (just 97 mins) that leaves you thinking, 'Is that it?'

Balancing emotive drama, pop history and evocative period piece, the film is undeniably engrossing and an illuminating addition to the Beatles mythology.


... I still say that "Paul" is way too short.

Clearly, John's masterpiece, "Nowhere Man" was describing someone VERY different from himself.....I could rock on like a 2nd year English Major at a state university (which I was ), but I'd rather have a different title....like...."When the Rain Came"

Nowhere Boy is playing at the Mill Valley Film Festival this year, on October 7th. I believe this is advance showing for the USA release.

On John's birthday, there's a John Lennon at 70 tribute at the Throckmorton Theater in MV, presented by John Goddard, proprietor of Village Records in MV, gone but not forgotten. Features a concert by the Rubber Soldiers (?) and rare Beatles footage from John's extensive collection.

Yeah, we're going to both. Wouldn't miss it. I need a lesson on how to comb my quiff.

I hate to be the curmudgeon here, but these clips dont give me too much hope.
For starters any writer worth his salt would never have John saying "I'm going to start a Rock'n'Roll group".
Skiffle yes, Rock'n'Roll, no. Not at that stage. And besides, John didn't have black hair.... far from it.

The closest I ever came to metting JL was knowing a friend of a friend who had met and chatted with John at na NYC party in the early 70s. One of the things he remarked was how RED John's hair was.

Oh yea... I also knew a guy who had been a dancer in one of the warmup acts on the Fabs first American tour. He had an interesting story about seeing Paul McCartney running down the hallway of a hotel in his underwear. The point of the whole thing was that the wild debauchery that went on during that time went severely un-reported. I can understand that. After all JFK was cavorting around in ways that would have made Bill Clinton blush and (although the press had caught wind) it was never reported.

Simply put, it was a very different era.

Is it too much to ask for an accurate film about the early Beatles? Maybe so.
