Yep! You say "wacky", I say "utterly useless". Horses for courses.datru wrote:Comb converter? What is that?
Is it the wacky "12-into-a-6-string" thing I've seen on vintage Rics?
(no offense meant by wacky - I love wacky.)
Re: Comb
Sorry for the delay, I was a bit under the weather today (when I say under the weather - remember it's Israel, it was HOT today, I had a terrible headache).
I will do it soon, I promise.

Re: Comb
JB, you know I respect your abilities and musicianship! But I've got to disagree here...I've played 6/12s and found them to function well, but only for rhythm and less vigorous lead work.
Surprising, actually. But I dig them for exactly their opposite intended purpose-- they're fine if they are not your only instrument...

Re: Comb
My issue is that even if you move 6 of the strings out of the way, you're still feeling them with your fretting hand. So it's not as if you can go from "Mr. Tambourine Man" to the solo from "Sunshine of Your Love", for example - that singing vibrato and the big bends just aren't gonna happen.jingle_jangle wrote:JB, you know I respect your abilities and musicianship! That being said, I would most definitely rock one as my main 12'er. They sound GREAT and are such curious instruments to behold! I dig 'em, just not as 6-strings.

Re: Comb
Gil--please take some aspirin and get in an air conditioned room as soon as possible. I have been waiting years to see this guitar in action.
Re: Comb
Seriously excellent post, this is one thing I've always wanted to see, and I find it strange that there's no video, no illustration to be found anywhere of the comb in use...
How does it work? Is the lever attached to that big post/screw thing or does it simply pivot against it? Is it a lever at all? HOW THE HELL DOES IT WORK!?

The post/screw simply the comb arm down after pressure is applied from holding the strings down. It doesn't "connect" to the arm per se, but is an adjustable stop for it.
They are pretty cool, I think----but it really depends on what kind of 6-string you want to play. If you want to play leads, like JB said---it's no good, but if you're strumming playing chords it's great.
