What model RIC on the new Tom Petty video ?
New Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Video.

What RIC is Scott Thurston playing? LOOKS like a 620/12 Fireglow..
but it appears to have: Toaster Pickups.. and a Trapeze Tailpiece..( which would be on the 660 )
Neck doesn't look wide.. and does not look like the 660 checkered binding..
Full width fret markers.. and what seems a fairly new burst ( darker around the edges )
so: ? a fairly recent 620.12... with added Toasters and Trapeze ?
I'm sure our experts here can help determine which RIC this is!

Believe it's a 660/12. Think I saw trapeze tail and toasters. Neck looks like the width of a 660.

Thanks for posting. Wow, the guitars in that room! Freeze at :35 to see 17 Rics on the racks.
The song itself is nice albeit VERY derivative of another song (Marc Cohn or Grant McLennan perhaps).

What I can't see... is the checkered binding
tried to look hard at the 3:22 mark. but just don't see it.
did RIC make 660's with plain white binding and white PG ? ( I actually like it better than gold PG and checkered binding! )

Maybe it's this one?
BTW, mm mm Mike Campbell's slide playing. He does George better than George!

Fantastic retrospective of Tom's career on British TV (last Friday - BBC4 I think) was on for about 3 hours, boy was there some Rickenbacker spotting going on, at one point Tom played a JG Doubleneck 6/12 - wicked! I must admit that TP & HB's had passed me by over the years, but what a great band and he seems a really cool (if somewhat "driven") geezer.

Re: What model RIC on the new Tom Petty video ?
I'd go with the new 620/12 FG with toasters/trapeze TP/vintage knobs concept. The TRC looks like the raised-logo type rather than the 660 vintage type.
Re: What model RIC on the new Tom Petty video ?
You might just have it. it COULD be Mike's 620/12..kennyhowes wrote:Maybe it's this one?
notes from a thread on the RIC forum.. about the Damn the Torpedoes Album cover photo:
" that guitar is Mike Campbell's 620/12, and the third Rickenbacker 12-string ever made. "
and
" I think John Hall said this is a 620/12, even if it should have been identified as a 625/12."
explains the non checkered binding.. trapeze tailpiece, white pickguard.. and Toasters.. ( ?vintage knobs? but can't see those in the LP cover) .
Wouldn't that be cool. . a RIC of Rock History! .. still makin music!
Re: What model RIC on the new Tom Petty video ?
May be a little off topic but the Les Paul that Mike Campbell's sportin' there is sweet.
Jangle, Chime & Twang.

You're right. Should have remembered this from way back. I think it was a prototype built in '63.

Ditto that. Also note the Kluson tuners and vintage black with white pointer knobs.Scastles wrote:Believe it's a 660/12. Think I saw trapeze tail and toasters. Neck looks like the width of a 660.
It'd be nice if Petty wrote something a little happier sounding. Sheesh.

I converted an older 620/12 into a replica of the DTT 625/12 for Forumite Glenn Wall, a few years ago:

Nice work on the 620/12, Paul. Looks like the real thing to me!
I was about to say that, with the new FWIs, you could get a post-early 2008 620/12 and do that conversion without having to redo the fretboard (unless you were set on sparkles). Problem is, the new FIreglo bursting is so dark around the edges that it might not match the '63 ambered Fireglo, IMO.

The new acrylic inlays don't look quite like the old, poured FWIs, Ron...they are brighter and pearlier. The older ones were deeper-looking and grayer. So, for real authenticity, I'll continue to pour these.

660/ pickguard is gold, not white.
