Favorite Byrd
Re: Favorite Byrd
David Crosby already said it-- Roger McGuinn, even by himself, IS the Byrds!!!!!
Re: Favorite Byrd
Yeah, think it's true to say McGuinn IS the Byrds, his sound is a constant, and if you go see the guy live, it feels like the Byrds. But the question is favourite Byrd? For me it's Gene Clark by a mile. He's the only one who's complete solo career I enjoy and get something out of, beautiful meloncholy to his compositions.
Always amazed how R.E.M drew comparisons with the Byrds and it being purely on the guitar level. If you listen to Gene Clark he's got a voice really similar to Michael Stipe, especially on a track like 'past addresses' (two sides to every story LP and on Flying High compilation) it could be the same guy.
Honestly don't think he gets anything like the recognition he deserves.

Re: Favorite Byrd
I heartily concur......Gene's songs were really exceptional. I have the feeling he would not agree, but I think his songs were perfect for the Byrds' signature sound.....I also have the feeling Dixson and Melcher re-arranged his songs beyond what he wanted, but in the end, great art was created, and the songs are haunting to this day...Scastles wrote:Gene Clark, who I consider to be a better songwriter than the others, and also underrated compared to his bandmates. McGuinn wrote some great tunes, but to me, there was something about Gene's stuff.

Gene for me too. He had such depth to his lyrics. A true poet.vynesmusic wrote:I heartily concur......Gene's songs were really exceptional. Gene is definitely my favourite of the original five.
